stuff has a "research" cost and a "craft" cost, example, 200 to research it, then another 100 to craft the item, once crafted the item can be used for the next prospect or open world, etc.
Correct, they are referring to the mission-based part of the game (the original game concept).
There are no exotics in open world, because while the workshop items might help people in open world, you can craft items that are equivalent (some WS items are better; some crafted items are better, ymmv).
The workshop items are necessary for the mission-based part of the game (the original game concept), as you need them to "jumpstart" your building, so you can complete the mission (and perhaps get exotics) before the mission ends (and to remove some of the repetativeness).
So, you get exotics and ren ONLY in the missions-based part of the game (this is NOT the open world radio missions), so you can buy workshop gear to take on harder missions.
If you want workshop items, you need to do the MISSION TREE part of the game, where those monies are awarded. (or edit your local files).
I know but when I click on the icon for the item to research it nothing happens. Everything still has the "lock" symbol next to it.
I find most items in the workshop degrade too quickly to be of much use. However the little modules you can add to your suit do help quite a bit. I run two movement modules (I'm not sure if they stack yet) and it helps a lot. I can outrun bears if I act quick enough. I get out of range and the bear leaves its aggro state and all is well. I can also out run wolves before they get a chance to attack.
The various backpacks and suits are also very good workshop items. As far as weapons and tools YMMV but I don't find them to be that good.
Also make sure you have enough of the correct currency. There's Ren and Exotics. Items can cost either or BOTH. You may need both, and don't have enough of one or the other. Or it may be exotics only, and you only have ren (or vice versa).
and, @ZombieHunter:
Yes, they stack. :)
