Can somone please clarify for me.

Hello, i was going to buy this game for me and a friend and rent a server for the Openworld map for us to play on but i saw a video that said you have to go and do other stuff to unlock tunnels to be able to access parts of the map. does that mean we cant do that together on that server? can someone please explain this to me as im a person with very little insight to this games mechanics. thank you.

If you are renting a server that will keep your game accessible to everyone in your group you should be able to say you log in and progress and unlock areas that are also open then for your team when they log in. If the personal dedicated server works like their centralized servers did.

Wel as you said you can rent a server or even setup z local server on a older pc. I rent one at nitrado and it works. Dedicated servers are stil in beta but for now no problems. Not many extra options to customised to your taste stil the game self has lots of options like dificulty lvl ect. The open world has to maps. The original one and the newer stycx. The habitat of bouth are different. The original setup of the game was go to the planet, fullfil your task and return to orbit to collect your reward in form of curenty and other stuf. With that you can buy equipment that you can use in your missions so the are more easy. That stuf you then can also use in the open world. In mision mode all you craft and build is lost once you return to orbit. The setup is the planet is unstable and stuf get destroid. You can start in openworld mode and enjoy the game. It is stil in progres as there are more things to come. There are also misions you can do while in open world mode to get stuf. It seems that for some passages to open you need to do the tasks in mission mode. I am a first day player and already done most of the missions so I dont know but it seems reasonable that some shortcuts in the map need to be unlockt in mission mode. There are misions like blast a way trough a cave, drill a passage ect. Maybe they make similar missions in open world to unlock those shortcuts. Not possible to say because the open world options are added only recently. Bouth modes are fun to do and behalf of doiing missions and return to orbit you now also have the chance to survival mode in open world. It pays of to do missions so you can buy extra gear and armor to make tasks easyer. But al stuf can be made in mision mode and open world mode. Instead of buying it in advance you have to craft it on the spot.
Maybe it is good to see some recent youtube video's to see how it works. I can say I enjoy this game and I am not the yongest wit my 66 springs.

On the STYX maps there are pathways that are blocked until you complete the associated missions to open them. I do not believe any significant pathways are blocked on Olympus, there are a few that open, but it is very easy to access the areas anyway.

Consider carefully doing the missions to open STYX up if you plan to play open world on that map.

- Completing MAELSTROM will unlock the D9 tunnel cave
- Completing RICOCHET will unlock the J13-K13 tunnel cave
- Completing VERTIGO will unlock the H5 tunnel cave
- Completing ZEPHYR will unlock access to the Ring Lake area

I think it does not matter on which difficult you unlock the mission. So regardless if you play the missions on easy they will unlock the passages in every mode for OW on styx. Correct me if I'm wrong.

can you complete the missions in open play mode or do you have to be in time limited mission mode?

Time limited (via mission menu) as far as I know, but the time limit should not be an issue. Plenty of time. But yes, annoying for OW mode players like myself to start over x times just to be able to play styx in OW. But that's the way it is at the moment.
