I haven't started missions yet, but planning well only to have a polar bear appear on your face doesn't sound challenging at all. It feels like a cruel joke of a difficulty level.
This thread gives the feel that playing on hard is a pointless effort when polar bears just appear on top of you...
Trying to surprise a bear that can just turn around and surprise YOU anyway no matter what you do?!
I may just stay on medium difficulty if they don't know how to make the game more difficult by just having polar bears appear on top of you like that...
This thread discourages me to even try a harder difficulty.
Just to add, if you ever played dungeons and dragons,
some dungeon masters are fair while others are just out to kill your character no matter what...
Victory! I killed it!
No. you didn't...its twin brother comes up behind you and delivers a crushing blow!
What?! 0o HOW!? "I run away..".
You can't... its faster...
"You lose...muhahaha!!!"
Most spawns are static spawn locations, so when you have some experience, you'll know where you can meet what animal.
Another spawn type is mission related - like enemies spawning in when you do a scan, or challenge boss that has adds.
Enemies spawning anywhere is a thing of long past, times when regular wolves were deadly.
Most important thing is planning ahead correctly and adapting your plan if it doesn't work.
For example, when you extract enzyme, MULTIPLE bears spawn at same time on top of Bear cubs. You fight like 6-8 mature Bears in a row, coming in packs of 2. And it is doable solo.
Some strategy tips:
When you know you will face multiple enemies use Hedgehogs, they are not so hard to make and deal nice damage while slowing down foes.
Also, there is a few types of hunting towers that enemies can't hit - as such they can't bring your building down. Enemies try to get to spot where you are, if you are above, and they have no path to you they'll stay below you. If there is nothing to hit there, they won't. So build a construction that has no supporting walls/beams in a ceratin radius below you - and voila! free kill. (remember that enemies can use ramps just like you. Use beams as ladders.
I need just 6-7 wooden beams to create indestructible tower
But yeah I mean it’s a game. They don’t spawn a baby bear in a cave and slowly have it age up, and then come out of a cave after 8 years and walk around in the Arctic.
Everything gets spawned outa nowhere sadly that’s how games handle spawning most games try to keep spawns outside of player fov though. And icarus actually tends to put even boss spawns outside fov. Either behind a hill, behind a rock or something so you don’t see it pop into existence.
Spawning out of view would help.
An addition to your idea would be to only allow enemy spawns a fair radius away from the character at all times.
Meaning, they may never spawn right on top of you.
You will always have a fair warning that something is approaching; now that would be more fair.
You will have a fair time to react to approaching threats.
Run away...or...fight should be the basic choices.
NOT a bear spawns on top of you what do you do?! 0o :P D: xx
An example would be if you actually heard "ROARS" and see how many are approaching your position. You will have some time to decided to run away or fight or some other running plan.
… that wasn’t an idea. That’s how the mission spawns work. Like currently right now.
Also animals like bears do roar. And have a 2nd type of roar for when they draw agro. So that’s in game already as well.
The only time animals spawn on top of you, is if you are on a spawn point for animals.
That is the point I wanted to discuss.
Animals should never spawn on top of a character.
Spawning points should be more dynamic in respect to the characters position.
A spawn radius "dead zone" around the character. Creatures may only spawn outside the spawning dead zone to prevent spawning on top of the character.
Eh that’s super exploitable. Have one player do a mission. Then have a group of other players standing in a circle around that player at a distance. Preventing enemies from spawning because of the dead zone
Multiplayer and single player would both be effected by this though…
So, the issue is, the spawn points only activate if there is a player in X distance.
There is no "dead zone", because to make one, you would eliminate almost all of the spawning zone.
So yes, you can (and probably always will) have things appear near you.
I posted on their upvote about the issues with the spawning mechanic a year ago, in BETA. I don't see it changing any time soon, unfortunately.
How to mitigate this?
1. Hug the walls. Creatures don't spawn on or in mountains (other than the worms in caves), so if you have a wall to your left, nothing can spawn to your left, and you need only watch to the RIGHT.
2. Avoid narrow passages. Not always possible, because of what's available on the mission, is there any other passage, etc. The devs love to pack narrow passages with spawns. Especially predator spawns, so you have no room to avoid them.
3. Don't stand still - keep moving. Move fast. Because it takes a moment for the creatures to first spawn in, sense you, give a warning, and then attack... it's possible that you can run past something as it spawns, and get out of range before it actually goes into attack mode. This is kind of counter-intuitive from other games, where you go slow, and "clear" an area before moving on. Speed is life on Icarus, because you can "outrun the spawners". However, if you DO get forced to stop... immediately check your six, as you may have things chasing you....
2nd bear still jumped me from the back while i was shooting the boss. it must be a spawn cause i specifically killed everything in the back before starting the fight.
What event were you playing?
Were you extracting exotics or enzyme extraction or some other extraction event?
When I set up for my first enzyme extraction event I made sure to hunt down that brown bear or any bear for that matter before beginning the extraction.
Only wolves showed up during the extraction.
The part I find interesting is maybe bears spawn during certain extraction events.
Maybe for just exotics bears spawn in...not sure.
