ohhh I did not know that about the tap... thanks that might be the part I was missing. I knew about hold R for picking version of the item to place
Also a note on the context marker color. It indicates structural stability of that piece. Blue indicates directly supported by the ground, green is good support, yellow is stable but be careful if adding more, to red which will fail and crumble immediately.
All the other building pieces have a similar inner/outer quadrant setup. Beams included. The problem with beams is how narrow the beams are means you can't really see it and whether you're looking down or from the side changes the context too.
How exactly are you trying snap beam pieces together? I've found that crouch walking so you can't fall off it all the way to the tip of the 45 or horizontal beams and then pointing at the tip in the quadrant I want helps. Pointing at the end of a beam is also different than directly in the middle. I still haven't figured out how to angle a beam down from a location by itself, but for bridges I just hop to the other side and build up from there meeting in the middle. I guess one way is to angle a ramp piece down using the R to switch between up or down and then attach the beam to its side.
Anyway, I typically have some pretty elaborate beam cliff climbing setups where I need them. You can free place beams to make a weather proof ramp wide enough that you can ride mounts up.
