Just an idea, no flame :)
Second point, there would be some appitures of some sort to allow you to hook up water and/or air containers. Think more in terms of a professional divers suit.
Third point, that is more then a little annoying. But i think it is in part to having the hook ups for your water and oxygen tanks. Nothing is safe from leaks.
Fourth point, Think more in terms of a professional divers suit. Yes they can provide some protection from the elements, but even the best suit still needs heating from top side when you get REALLY down deep. Hot water is nice down that far.
Fourth point cont, Think more in terms of a professional divers suit. The suit it self is a jump suit, kinda of like coveralls. They do a specific function and that's it. The "armours" you can make help you to hide from animals, gives you more heat or cold resistance, and other such things. They are addons, you don't need to make any of them, they just make things easier.
So, why can everything else breathe, but you not?
Does it explain how you get pneunomia in that lore as well?
The lore says that they gods added pneumonia to force surveyors don't build bases in caves. After they discover they could use a easy to get drink to get out of that from their system they added the worms.
The suit's only major function is that it keeps you from breathing cyanide and junk in the air. You don't actually drink water or eat with your face because you can't remove your helmet or faceplate; the suit has a "digestive pouch" you stick food into, and a "refillable water bladder" for you to drink from.
The water filter and eating system are mega jank, though, because you can get the runs from drinking lake water, and food can also make you sick. It definitely doesn't keep bacteria and fungi from getting into your system when you're in a cave (pneumonia). It probably doesn't even do a great job at keeping breathable toxins out -- just good enough so you don't die from it during the length of a drop.
(also, since suit is likely not the greatest at it's job, the pneumonia does hint at very damp air, so then said air ends up getting through whatever filter the suit is using)
