BEARS NEED FIXING
For some reason bears are the only species ingame to be able to run up perfectly vertical walls and rocks. so if youve recently landed and dont have everything, your done for. Also, dodging doesn't exist with any animal that attacks you so forget that. Bears just need to be fixed in the "climbing vertical 180s" department lol. oh and theyre so damn fast, ive put all my points in speed and stam and still get out ran by a bear RIP.

It seems that every single thing Dean does needs some fixing...

I believe the bears climbing rocks is intentional, as bears are good climbers in real life. They are the only creature in the game that can do this (so far?) and the rest are not good climbers in real life.

You can dodge a bear's attack. You have to time it correctly. Took me a while to get it (and I still sometimes mess up).

You can also easily kill a bear if you jump in water. Unlike real life, they swim slow in game, and you can swim backwards just ahead of them, and stab them in the face without them able to hit you at all. (also referred to as "cheesing" the bear, because it's a lame, cheesy way to kill them)

Dodging doesn't seem to work lately they seem to have some sort of AoE hit range. Since noticed even when fully avoiding them still got damaged.

Hahaha. I just had this happen. A bear was a solid 50 feet below me. I'm standing on a cliff thinking I was safe. Nope. Pulled out good old knife and started to stab away till i died. RIP

This is why you don't bring a knife to a bear fight ;)

Depends on the bear....polar bear? Big nope because it has further reach. The other bears? Doable. Just walk backwards and keep stabbing. Did it with the first workshop knife too.

Best to avoid bears of stealth head shot from a distance followed by more to the head.

i can confirm that bear dodging didnt get nerfed at all, works like it always did. you can still dodge every bear, even polar bears, and even with a knife, 10min ago...
btw polar bears seem to have exactly the same hit range, they just hit harder and have more health

i wanna add, yes you can dodge them with skill but its hella broke, i can "dodge" a bear and see it hit thin air, yet the hit still registers on me, this goes for literally every animal. dodging and turning around to see it miss but still take dmg.

When you've played games for 40 years the term is Kiting.

But yes, bears actually can climb up straight cliffs. I've seen it in real life. Their better climbers than goats!

Yeah but goats don't climb steep cliffs as if they were flat ground. Bears in game are as fast up a cliff as on flat ground.
And looking at that goats have four legs they technically are better climbers.

You can actually outrun the bear if you have both movement modules (they stack), cloth armor and a bonus to movement speed while equipping a weapon (talent). I've out-sprinted polar bears and regular bears with this, they're usually just not worth killing.
Peace Saintjohn Dec 16, 2021 @ 10:19pm
Try running toward trees and concaved stone surface. Bears cannot actually climb vertically up but a very high angle, and they take time to turn when hit an unclimbable obstacle. I outrunned a bear by going through a narrow checkpoint of two trees, which stops bears. Of course, this only work with a runner character.

Kiting also works. When a wildlife takes damage, they travel to the place where you fired the projectile, not directly toward you. This can reposition the bear from a narrow path, or rinse and repeat to kill it.

Currently, I found non of the mission that requires players killing any polar bears. I assume the polar bears are completely optional territorial mini bosses, and their pelt can be used on the best arctic armor in this game. They also drop a lot of prime meat(than brown bears). Just give up about killing them using bows, it takes ages. Use Hunting Rifle, or avoid any contact. They are quite easy to be spotted on open snow fields, with the talent that reveals health bar it is even easier(I haven't got ambushed by polar bears yet).
