High Tier crafting/farming, and YOU!
Ive seen a lot of gripe about anything in the game that takes time and investment. Its so pointless, why is it there? Why build when i can just finish the mission?

Well these people have played too much fortnite or Monster Hunter.

You CAN speed run for workshop items, but heres a secret, most of them are pretty crappy. The oxygen tank and the canteen are literally the greatest items on there. So lets suppose you are an amazing speed runner and you have the best stuff off the workshop. . . what are you going to do with that stuff? The game isnt intended to be speedruns.

The core loop is to establish outposts, build up tech and power, prepare for the challenge, achieve the goal, vacate the planet. Its intended to take time, thus the week long timers. The workshop gear that people think is the best stuff in the game is only there to make later runs start faster, skipping some of the more tedious steps or speeding them up drasticly.
The game is still a long form survival game, but with goals.
Subnautica is one of my favorite survival games because it has constantly moving goals, and an ending to it. Imagine this more like playing Subnautica, Green Hell, The Forest, or Grounded, but with a NG+ mode.

If you want to speed run for RP, great. I recommend you do a 30 day exploration though. Struggle to build electronics. Spend the time to get your first rifle. Build a fully stone building, a glass greenhouse, a fabricator. Once you have your fabricator, build a fridge.

There is ONE glaring issue with the 30d Prospects, and that is you cant earn RP or Exotics at all, but this is the traditional survival game like Rust or ark. This is 'Domination' mode where you own the map.

The high level, grind stuff is the way it is because its supposed to be long form. You arent meant to drop into a prospect and have electricity running in an hour.

IF this game made it quicker and easier to build the bases you are about to have wiped then it would probably work, but that is called balance, and not something this company seems too fond on.

This is literally what the game does with talents/blueprints/workshop tools. If you spec well then you can skip a lot of the tedious portions of first dropping and get a new base up quickly.

Yeah if you are happy knocking up a thatch/wood Lightning seeker then it's great, i got led astray at the start of this game like a lot of people and made a few statements that certainly didn't bear fruit, it is reasonably well built for the first few sessions, as it seems to give you anticipation of things getting even better, it is the following sessions where the problem and lack of varied gameplay revealed itself to me, it is easy to build a thatch hut/box, it is equally as easy to lose it and all the stations you had to build and cram inside it to be able to build anything above a simple bow and arrow and stone tools, i didn't realise at the start all the stuff you need for anything other than thatch/wood huts, bow and arrows and caveman tools are only to be found in caves with rubbish inhabitants that respawn as soon as you walk/run a short distance away, the caves which also cripple you within a minute or 2 of standing about 10ft inside a massive cavernous opening because you know that spacesuit you are wearing that is sealed and needs a constant oxygen supply apparently gives you pneumonia from standing inside the entrance for a minute, you know the same suit that allows you to stay underwater forever you know like those people who have gone to the effort of building bases with working campfires/torches.............. all underwater............ and the reason for doing that other than they can? well nothing bothers them there, literally, they can live forever under the sea...................... as long as they have clean oxygen supplies which are negated by the magical entrances of caves!!!! oh and somehow having the ability to disable the timer that is supposed to add the missing excitement the game seemed to promise.

Also a big fan of the AI in this game, especially the deer and rabbits getting on so famously with the predator's that only go for me, some of the best screenshots are a rabbit running over a wolves paw as it turns to go for me about 40ft away behind it and even downwind (If the wind direction actually did anything in the game) or the one where a bear was stuck against a full grown deer and its baby which was stopping it getting to me who again was about 40ft away and out of its sight when it started stampeding and making lots of noise, it didn't bother mummy and baby one bit though bless them, as they seemed too busy getting stuck against the tree/rock combo off to the side, and after some minutes of watching this which even included the bear losing interest in me and then ramping up again to rinse/repeat the bear seemed to disappear.................... only to magically re-appear from the ground when i got closer long after the deer and baby had finally freed themselves unscathed from a bear literally having its open mouth through their sides, it then had a clear run to me and killed me after 3 arrows were sticking out of its noggin.

It is fair to say i have changed my mind about the game since those first 5-10 hours and posted a review explaining so, this game felt like it could have been something special but shortly revealed itself to be a bit of an empty shell.

i found the AI pretty exceptional compared to most survival games. Goats and deer have vision on the sides of their heads, if you approach slowly from behind you can get about 20 ft from wolves and bears before they hear you. Deer laydown in thunder storms. Gun shots scatter nearby critters. Leaving corpses at higher levels attracts predators. You can use this to set traps.
If you dont like the friendly animals, just wait till you reach the desert. Elephants act as gang leaders often with 1-2 animals of any sort following on either side of them. If you attack any critter even unaffiliated ones, elephants act as defenders and will agro.
There are still some issues. If you dont fence or wall off from your house, any predators that get right up next to it will sense you inside. Any animal that doesnt run from being shot is a masters level mathematician specializing in trigonometry and can triangulate the direction of the shot.
Comparing any problems with the AI or gameplay loop to . . . Rust or Ark. . . I struggle to think of what game does it better.

The point here is sessions are meant to be progressed and prepared for. You can cheese it on speed runs, but thats not the intent of design. If you cheese speed runs you can have 10000 rp and everything unlocked, and still be level 15.

Higher tier buildings really are super pricey to build, but again intent, its meant to be a team game. Solo tree and other talents can reduce cost of building stuff, or increase yields.

Basically the way me and a few friends have ended up playing this has been by landing, quickly getting the starter tools (don't even bother with the exotic tools, whats the point?) bow and stone arrows, knife and then finding a decent sized rock that can be mined and excavating it so we can place a bedroll and campfire and that is our base on every single map so far after losing the ones we built with thatch/wood to lightning and wipe after finishing, we just live inside small rocks, it is all we need and we can complete almost any mission by exploiting the scripted missions part and cheesing any bosses with starter weapons.

There are these rocks all over the map, it is a super easy tiny home and you do not need anything else at all to do the missions anyway, unless you want to spend hours and hours to "Make it easier" lol

I had a friend like this who would play every new game on the easiest mode then complain about how short or boring they were.

Well i can see i made a mistake here, and people are going to get out of this what they want. If 'winning' the game in a few hours is what makes you the coolest kid in school then i cant help you. I thought i would help people see the game from a different angle instead of the constant negativity that is flooding the forums.

Once you get your fabricator built, the only truly useful item is the hunting rifle. After that the bio-fuel generator and the water pump. After that the time and materials required just aren't really worth it for ANY MISSION. 60 electronics for the material processor and another 60 for the furnace is ridiculous just for composites which you don't really need except for certain missions. Which brings me to another thing, why does the fabricator need 30 electronics when it does not even require power to use? just something to think about.

Agreed, fabricator is NOT the issue.. it is anything past that. I usually just rush to fabricator and then 2-3 extractors depending on the missions exotic vein slots so 40-45 electronics.

This takes maybe a couple of hours depending if I also want to get into kitchen stuff for better buffs etc.

Now to get power? LMAO no.. I'll never build a generator or radar again unless asked to by the mission.

This requires and additional 142 Electronics and on top of that another 40 copper ingots and 8 gold bars. So you have to do THREE TIMES as much gathering JUST to get to power/radar? That's too much.. cut the electronics directly in half. I could deal with twice as much.. but an additional increase of 68% resources needed is completely ridiculous and simply put there to gate keep the progression with fake grind content.

We speed run because we've been there done that & got the T-Shirt. We've worked out exactly how much luggage to take & can mentally work out the steps we need to complete certain tasks efficiently. We've worked out the animal behaviour, know where the veins & best caves are for each prospect & where to build. (thatch not included). We've also worked out the weather system as to what we can get away with in the open (whether to hunker down or not). We've all built the same tier 4 stuff both when it was a ridiculous amount before the change. The only thing left is for me personally is to beat my own times & exotic count. Hardcore runs are a staple diet as it adds a touch of adrenaline. We can also take our time and build beautiful houses & bases filled with everything you can possibly build however we call these things "Outposts" so we can stash our well earned cash in metal chests & pull a fresh beer from the refrigerator. In over 900hrs now I've had a lot of fun as a Solo & I'm looking forward experiencing Group play in the days ahead.

Yea its pretty much just anything that requires composites. Because you need that mat processor, furnace, wiring tool and generator just go get composite. And that one little half tier bump there is just a brutal amount of copper.

Also the nano armor is broken OP. Once you have it you can pretty much just sprint through almost every mission with basically no risk, Though obviously you still wont be face tanking polar bears. But short of that you can basically knife every other creature to death with it assuming you have decent food buffs.

Yup, play it how you want man. We still build the radar every single time. Partially because exotic locations haven't been reliable in a few cases and partially because its not that bad to just do it the way it was intended to be done.
