building in caves has saved me the need to run back and forth for metal where i can just smelt in the cave in a safe spot take my goods and be on my way
I can easily have a 4 x 4 stone house up in 30 mins, yes I drop with the dong axe, I do know where the caves are. but I dont ♥♥♥♥ around, I hit the ground, make for a cave setup a small 2 x 1 wood base, get the first furnace and start smelting iron. Also dont mine 300 iron ore all at once then take it back, that's dumb. I mine the first node start it cooking, then mine 2 more, start them cooking, while the next 2 are cooking, I gather wood and stone, etc. ALWAYS productive.
Another tip, take down and store benches you dont need, or destroy them for mats. You dont NEED a 10 x 10 base for any mission, I have solo'd nearly every mission with nothing more than a 4 x 4 stone base.
If you are logical and productive the game is not hard, if you wander aimlessly, yes you are screwed.
As for gear, of course any game is harder at start and you build up to better gear, that is EVERY GAME, so on your first drop it is going to take longer, but you should eventually get better I hope..
I have a wife, children, full-time job, house, and all of that as well, and can still have a stone house up in 30 mins..
Maybe this just isn't the game for you champ.
You're a contractor hired to complete a mission. If that mission doesn't require a big base then just build the minimum to get the job done and go. If you choose to waste time building an unnecessary structure that's on you.
There are talents that boost lightning rods, and others that make wood buildings much more viable. There are also stone building cost reductions in the talent tree which makes stone rather easy to make. If you focus you can get enough for a small stone base very easily. You can build in cave entrances and that seems to provide some protection from storms. I've never had wood base built in a cave entrance catch on fire due to lightning (no lightning rod). I'm sure it happens, but I think with the cave and mountain or hill protecting part of your structure it's less frequent.
This game gives you so many options, including hollowing out a large rock and using that for shelter.
Absolutely this.
Ohhhh dude don't slap them so hard with facts. I might need longer since i'm not really in a hurry and also often look for certain places to build a home but i'm pretty sure you can do that in the timeframe you claim. Once you set up all the tools production is usually quick.
I / we usually end up with a 5x2 or 5x3 with a sloped roof that we can use as additional floor space by adding a staircase and floors.
Yeah, I know. Every time I try to use logic and facts to explain something on the forums people get really mad. Often unnecessarily and inappropriately mad.
You're right. A quick 5x2 is usually sufficient for just about everything you need. I can fit a fireplace, a bed (not bedroll, an actual bed), concrete furnace, cement mixer, skinning table, woodworking table, glassworking table, the armour making table (forget the name), five crop plots, a workbench, two small storage boxes, a herbalism bench, kitchen bench (the tier 2) a mortar and pestle, machining table, biofuel composter, and a mason bench in a 5x2 that has a 1x3 extension on the side. All on one floor, too. I could add a second floor but I had no need for it.
Yeah, it's a bit cramped but it all fits and I can walk around everything. I have that setup in my current prospect. If I got rid of the crop plots and re-arranged things a little I think I could fit all the crafting stations in the 5x2. It's stone walls/roof with some wood beams and a wood floor. I have a lightning rod on the building (and some talents that make it more durable) so I've never had any issue with fires. It didn't take all that long to set it up and I wasn't really in a rush. I'm sure if I focused on gathering just the items i need to build a stone structure then I could have done it in an hour or so, maybe less.
What we're saying is the building part of each mission is a non-issue. As you build your talents, unlock workshop items, and learn the game a bit better you can set up a base quickly. The first few missions, yeah, it takes a while. Drop with a pick and an axe with a character that's got a few skills that speed up gathering and reduce the cost of building pieces? You'll be slapping up a decent size base in 30-60 minutes or less.
Can't really argue with that, there are outpost maps so you can do that if you want.
Some of the longer missions also allow plenty of time for big builds if you want to put in the work.
You are correct, you can always go bigger, that's the fun in the game, it's up to you. But to my point, you can finish every mission even the T4 missions with a 4 x 4 stone base with flat roof, I have done nearly all of them and several T4s. And my stone is up in 30 minutes or less.
Another tip, ALWAYS use the upgrade tool for speed, seriously anyone who is tearing down their wood base and rebuilding to stone, moving their benches, etc.. and complaining about time.. I have no words.. The games gives you everything you need to excel, all you have to have is a brain to recognize it.
For base building I go to the outposts; ores respawn, no weather to deal with, go ham.
The key word is WANT, you don't have to go bigger than 4 x 4 for any mission so far, but if you WANT to go ham, even on the 6 day missions you have plenty of time and resources to do it. You certainly dont NEED anything bigger than 4 x 4 for any mission thus far.
Outposts aren't that bad, wish they were bigger and you could have checkboxes for weather and dangerous animals (wolves bears), there are the 30 day missions..
(this is assuming you want to build a base that matters, it's the difference between playing minecraft creative and survival, one base you live in, the other you look at. Outposts exist but there is literally no reason to do anything there so while you CAN build large bases there is no incentive to. Right now Icarus really does have to work on making base design a more crucial component, at least on some mission types because its a really fleshed out and fun system with no reason to exist.)
edit : one example of how they could actually make the system matter somewhat is by the addition of vehicles which they have teased in the past and I assume is what they are waiting for when it comes to these long term missions. Once vehicles get added ramps to go up mountains and whatnot, tree clearing, etc all become more relevant consideration and you can traverse the map in a reasonable enough time that resource collection and hauling isn't a concern.
