Maintenance game not survival game ....
this game seems to be more about maintaining any building you make more than using it as a shelter or somewhere to store you crafting tables etc .. wood is pathetic and blows down in a breeze , stone is better , but takes so long gathering iron to make nails to hold your walls up that unless there is a larger group of players , it is UTTERLY POINTLESS wasting time building anything , if you do build something and go to do some mission 'work' , if a storm comes in , you may not have any building left to go back to .. lightning rods that get destroyed by lightning also seems like a waste of time, need to have 3 or 4 at the ready for every storm which means lots more mining copper just to try and help your building survive a flash storm ... as much as i like this game , i am rapidly getting bored of the mechanics that mean if you build a base , you spend soo much time trying to maintain or upgrade it even to stone , that its easier to just use a large rock hollowed out to put your bedroll and a camp fire in ...

in short ... DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME BUILDING BASES .... it may well lead to your enjoyment of the game diminishing at a rapid rate of knots ... faster than the wind that blows down a wooden house ...

Thatch is the only useless build. If there is a storm of that nature anyway you cant go outside much so while waiting it out just repair when it gets down low. I also agree that lightning rods are useless unless you have the talent for durability...but also...once again just stay indoors during those severe storms, have a firewacker in hand and hit the one square the fire starts and its out after 3-4 hits so no point for the rods.

Thatch will save you in the the desert and arctic storms for easy mats and near weightless. Pack up a 4x6 (floor x wall) and forget it until you are exposed.

i will say, to this i have learned myself that it is better to claim a cave, having to put up with a few worms on entry each time is nothing as you get comfortable with the game, but the amount of time i have spent in repairs rathen then new designs is absolutely rediculous. i have tried using elaborate designs with plenty of stability that would be destroyed in a storm. 3 hours of work for one storm..
building in caves has saved me the need to run back and forth for metal where i can just smelt in the cave in a safe spot take my goods and be on my way

I just made a test - once you have your stone tech unlock , you can build your stone base in 20 mins.

In 5 mins you have all you need to smelt ores , 10 mins to make 2 runs and get ores for Anvil , Stonecutter table and make your 2 tiles first stone shelter.
Where are 5 mins more? Those you spend waiting for ores to smelt.

I lost my house and whole set of workshops like 5 times to lightening, which just burned it.
I learned my lesson , now , If im to build a base , I rush stone one. With stone one 0 pbs from weather.

Once you will go into Ice Biome , you will die without stone 1 tile shelter.
Just get gut at the game and enjoy. Its is an interesting game, once you stop ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ on it and try to learn its ways.

I would love to see you build a stone house that is big enough to craft stuff that is actually worth using in less than half an hour ... even if you are building it right outside the cave entrance its still going to take more than half an hour ...

also , how many 3d tools etc are you spawning in with ? and how many suit perks etc are neglecting to declare ? even with the basic axe , pick and knife it still takes time even finding caves etc to get iron for nails from .... unless you use the same map repeatedly and learn every inch of it so know exactly where to go to find what you need ...

and you can might say im ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about the game , i think i am merely pointing out that anyone with any kind of life that cant spend 15 hours a day on it learning where to get everything , is going to have issues like myself and many many others ,

so HOORAY for you not having to spend any of your time with RL stuff like kids or a wife , and CONGRATULATIONS on being able to build a stone house in 15 minutes , if that is fact and not biofuel ....

I can easily have a 4 x 4 stone house up in 30 mins, yes I drop with the dong axe, I do know where the caves are. but I dont ♥♥♥♥ around, I hit the ground, make for a cave setup a small 2 x 1 wood base, get the first furnace and start smelting iron. Also dont mine 300 iron ore all at once then take it back, that's dumb. I mine the first node start it cooking, then mine 2 more, start them cooking, while the next 2 are cooking, I gather wood and stone, etc. ALWAYS productive.

Another tip, take down and store benches you dont need, or destroy them for mats. You dont NEED a 10 x 10 base for any mission, I have solo'd nearly every mission with nothing more than a 4 x 4 stone base.

If you are logical and productive the game is not hard, if you wander aimlessly, yes you are screwed.

As for gear, of course any game is harder at start and you build up to better gear, that is EVERY GAME, so on your first drop it is going to take longer, but you should eventually get better I hope..

I have a wife, children, full-time job, house, and all of that as well, and can still have a stone house up in 30 mins..

Maybe this just isn't the game for you champ.

You're a contractor hired to complete a mission. If that mission doesn't require a big base then just build the minimum to get the job done and go. If you choose to waste time building an unnecessary structure that's on you.

There are talents that boost lightning rods, and others that make wood buildings much more viable. There are also stone building cost reductions in the talent tree which makes stone rather easy to make. If you focus you can get enough for a small stone base very easily. You can build in cave entrances and that seems to provide some protection from storms. I've never had wood base built in a cave entrance catch on fire due to lightning (no lightning rod). I'm sure it happens, but I think with the cave and mountain or hill protecting part of your structure it's less frequent.

This game gives you so many options, including hollowing out a large rock and using that for shelter. :steamhappy:

Ohhhh dude don't slap them so hard with facts. I might need longer since i'm not really in a hurry and also often look for certain places to build a home but i'm pretty sure you can do that in the timeframe you claim. Once you set up all the tools production is usually quick.
I / we usually end up with a 5x2 or 5x3 with a sloped roof that we can use as additional floor space by adding a staircase and floors.

Yeah, I know. Every time I try to use logic and facts to explain something on the forums people get really mad. Often unnecessarily and inappropriately mad.

You're right. A quick 5x2 is usually sufficient for just about everything you need. I can fit a fireplace, a bed (not bedroll, an actual bed), concrete furnace, cement mixer, skinning table, woodworking table, glassworking table, the armour making table (forget the name), five crop plots, a workbench, two small storage boxes, a herbalism bench, kitchen bench (the tier 2) a mortar and pestle, machining table, biofuel composter, and a mason bench in a 5x2 that has a 1x3 extension on the side. All on one floor, too. I could add a second floor but I had no need for it.

Yeah, it's a bit cramped but it all fits and I can walk around everything. I have that setup in my current prospect. If I got rid of the crop plots and re-arranged things a little I think I could fit all the crafting stations in the 5x2. It's stone walls/roof with some wood beams and a wood floor. I have a lightning rod on the building (and some talents that make it more durable) so I've never had any issue with fires. It didn't take all that long to set it up and I wasn't really in a rush. I'm sure if I focused on gathering just the items i need to build a stone structure then I could have done it in an hour or so, maybe less.

What we're saying is the building part of each mission is a non-issue. As you build your talents, unlock workshop items, and learn the game a bit better you can set up a base quickly. The first few missions, yeah, it takes a while. Drop with a pick and an axe with a character that's got a few skills that speed up gathering and reduce the cost of building pieces? You'll be slapping up a decent size base in 30-60 minutes or less.

Can't really argue with that, there are outpost maps so you can do that if you want.
Some of the longer missions also allow plenty of time for big builds if you want to put in the work.

You are correct, you can always go bigger, that's the fun in the game, it's up to you. But to my point, you can finish every mission even the T4 missions with a 4 x 4 stone base with flat roof, I have done nearly all of them and several T4s. And my stone is up in 30 minutes or less.

Another tip, ALWAYS use the upgrade tool for speed, seriously anyone who is tearing down their wood base and rebuilding to stone, moving their benches, etc.. and complaining about time.. I have no words.. The games gives you everything you need to excel, all you have to have is a brain to recognize it.

For base building I go to the outposts; ores respawn, no weather to deal with, go ham.

If you really had a sand box that included everything in the game then i would
agree. But in reality outposts are not that great yet. Hopefully they will get some
work and it would actually be worth building a huge base. playing the prospect missions
there is no point for the most part and impossible for some with very short timers.

The key word is WANT, you don't have to go bigger than 4 x 4 for any mission so far, but if you WANT to go ham, even on the 6 day missions you have plenty of time and resources to do it. You certainly dont NEED anything bigger than 4 x 4 for any mission thus far.

Outposts aren't that bad, wish they were bigger and you could have checkboxes for weather and dangerous animals (wolves bears), there are the 30 day missions..

Nah.

Just don't build thatch or wood. Stone is all you will ever need and you don't have to worry about storms.
honestly? Wood is fine, you just have to build smart. I have a wood house and have for real-world days without issue, never even put up a lightning rod or anything and I've almost never had to repair it. The key building smart over just building, a box house is not going to last you in the slightest.

No he didn't.
I mean, honestly right now he did. Icarus doesn't have any long term challenging missions which is a damn shame. I mean the entirety of tier 4 is useless just because it takes so long to get any of that stuff you can't realistically use it on any missions unless you have a small army alongside you. Even then though, good luck supplying all of those people with the good gear you made that expensive fabricator to make anyway since that good gear also costs quite a lot. Icarus could really benefit from some higher threat long term missions. Imagine a wave survival thing where you go to a dropped pod and defend it, or having to reconstruct something massive before you can leave, or even having to build up an arsenal and attack an alien hive or something like in factorio. Tier 4 just doesn't really have a reason to exist right now, I mean tier 3 is already kind of pushing it in my opinion but I can see how it might be reasonable. A high pay, high risk, long term mission type would be amazing for the game but right now AFAIK it doesn't exist.

(this is assuming you want to build a base that matters, it's the difference between playing minecraft creative and survival, one base you live in, the other you look at. Outposts exist but there is literally no reason to do anything there so while you CAN build large bases there is no incentive to. Right now Icarus really does have to work on making base design a more crucial component, at least on some mission types because its a really fleshed out and fun system with no reason to exist.)

edit : one example of how they could actually make the system matter somewhat is by the addition of vehicles which they have teased in the past and I assume is what they are waiting for when it comes to these long term missions. Once vehicles get added ramps to go up mountains and whatnot, tree clearing, etc all become more relevant consideration and you can traverse the map in a reasonable enough time that resource collection and hauling isn't a concern.

it takes like 5 minutes to gather for a small thatch or wood house.. and maybe 20 for a stone. Im not really annoyed at all by this. also a wood house will last and work just fine for lots of the missions if you apply yourself. There's talents and better hammers to make the hammer pretty much instant and a lightning rod to ensure its not getting struck and burned.
Moe 8 ENE 2022 a las 11:15
maybe survival games arent for you OP. its not meant to be a cakewalk. anyway, building a wood house takes less than 10 minutes.
