Is there any trick to making more steel bloom/steel ingot?
Steel requires so much iron that I feel like I should mine just enough to make a steel pickaxe and jump straight to plat. Any advice?

Or you just bring the MXC Furnace from Workshop, you can unlock/buy it for just 550/50 R$.
It is "A premade furnace for ALL you smelting needs"
So you just need a mortar, and then turn your mined coal and iron directly to steel bloom and put it in furnace to get steel.

Oh wait...
They stuffed up a description ONCE AGAIN.
It only smelts copper and iron, not ALL you need, like steel and platinum :(

That is what I do. The wife is using a Plat pickaxe as soon as possible. Minimal steel made seeing as we go with Hunting rifles.

I never use steel tools, waste of steel, straight to plat.

But wait, don't you need a steel pickaxe to mine platinum?

Not the MXC pickaxe but the others from station can mine platinum. Use one of them to start and mine the plat and you should be able to make the plat pickaxe by time the one from station wears out.

I'm a bit confused on the whole pickax thing frankly.

I used to get a platinum pickax just in case i found an exotic to get the most out of it.

Then I found a platinum pickax got just as much out of an exotic node as an iron pickax.

Stone pickax gives 8 exotic
Iron - 16 exotic
Platinum - 16 exotic

Honestly I see no reason to use above iron unless you are aiming for T4 stuff.
Not sure it makes a difference in tools other than UI numbers that don't seem to reflect what is really going on? One person even told me, in a forum post from before, that increased yield only meant more per hit not more in total. But that makes no sense or there would be no increase from stone tools.

I don't even bother with steel unless I want the bolt action rifle.

I will test 2 runs of the Deep Vein mission. I believe that with stone pickaxe you only get 32 exotics but with others you can get upto 64. Higher tools do remove a deposit in fewer hits.

The fewer hits thing I would attribute to the AOE rating on them rather than yield being a factor in that. The AOE would break it down faster the yield should give you more per node I would think. Stone seems to be the only one that is reduced yield though? Will be interested in your test results!

Okay, stone pickaxe gets 8 exotics per deposit. The Iron and MXC pickaxe both get 16 exotics per deposit.

Well that makes sense in that the MXC is supposed to be basically equivalent to iron?

But shouldn't platinum pickax give more than iron?

Just ran it again with the KUANG pickaxe from the station it got 16 exotics per depsoit.

also on sulfur:
stone pickaxe 40
Iron pickaxe 80-86
Kuang pickaxe 90-96

maybe exotics arn't mined similar to other ores? or some of the pickaxes are bugged

I figure the workshop ones will work right. That would be a big oops ha ha.

I was more concerned with the Iron - steel - platinum differences.
Good to know about the workshop ones though, thanks!

And yeah it is unknown if exotics are in a class of their own or part of ore or what.

Think i also noticed that "Dong" gave me same 16 as basic MXC.

MXC = 115%
Dong = 125% +10% (so total +20% i guess)

Dong shoud give 19 according to those stats.

My guess, it is another bug that appies bonus the wrong way.
They made plenty of those with skills, where getting a skill would make you worse.

This case, maybe the additinal +10% yield get substracted from 10% better base yield, instead added on top ?

But that does not explain why Platinum is same 16 as Iron.

Added to list of things that make no sense in this game, and will probably never be fixed or explained by dev.

I have purchased the Dong. Like most other items, it wears out too quickly and as pointed out above, it makes little difference in the yields. Most of the workshop tools are junk in my opinion. The Shengong Shui knife it the best for durability. MXC Campfire? A joke. Kuang pickaxe? another joke. +30% wear on pickaxes
