Icarus
Building Mechanics, structural integriy
Is there a solid page that explains how the building mechanics work?

I'm just curious if I actually need to be building stone foundations, or using stone pillars etc at all. Just stone walls and a stone roof to stop the wind damage in the starting zone?

Any helps appreciated

height is the factor, usually you can watch to see the color of the next placed part and that will give you an indication of it's stability, but with height, cracks will start to appear when the placement is close to it's limit.
Stone will resist weather in most cases, on some missions it can take damage and in some biomes you need to build a specific way or the roof will collapse.
It's worthwhile to use the "bases" to build on, but they can have issues on some terrain, posts / poles often help if you place them first.

I'd be interested in the math of it all

if you're building horizontally, you can place about 3 to 4 pieces before things start to get dangerous, but if you can add supports to it you can extend things a fair way.

Thanks for the reply, thats some useful information.

I'm more or less curious about this so I don't go wasteing resources on things I don't have to, like using stone pillars when I could maybe get away with using timber ones etc

no worries, glad it helps :)
Wood poles are okay for most things under 5 stories high, they're also useful to make into fences (palisades) and corrals and work very well stacked 6 high slightly away from your base to act as lightning rods but not attached to your base as they burn (instead of your base) at about 6-7 high they start to crack and any higher they will just break after placement (you can brace them to get a little higher)
But, if something catches on fire, the fire will quickly travel along the poles like a fuse if attached or part of your base.
