If you are interested in survival/crafting games, especially cooperative ones, you could try it out. Since it is still in the Pre-Purchase window, you can fully refund the game if you try it out on a beta weekend and are disappointed.
In general, I'd say there are three questions to address for yourself before you consider buying the game though...
Can you even play the game? System requirements are on the higher end, so make sure you meet the requirements.
Do you have friends who also like survival/crafting games? At its core, this game is meant to be a cooperative game. While you can play it solo, the experience is designed around playing with at least one other person. You can't unlock all the tech tree/skills on a single character, so even having one extra person to play with allows you to specialize more. Naturally you can try and make new friends through the community, however, it's a lot easier if you have one or more joining in with you from the start.
How much free time do you have? This one I feel is an important one because the experience will likely be very different for someone with 40 hours of free time a week from someone with only 4 hours of free time a week. I have provided feedback to the developer that I feel the real-time constraint of prospects should be converted to game-time (or an optional setting). This is because the perma-death of your character if you fail to leave a prospect serves only as a punishment for players with less free time. Going back to my example, a person with 40 hours of free time a week would complete the prospect in a couple days and leave well before the time limit even mattered. While a person with 4 hours of free time a week likely wouldn't be able to complete the prospect at all and since they are less available in general would be more likely to lose their character permanently. I do hope the developer adjusts this so that players with less free time can enjoy this game since I feel like it has the makings of a very good game. I don't find design decisions that are meaningless to one class of players and only serve to punish another class of player aren't a good design. This doesn't affect me personally (I have 77 hours in beta weekends alone), but I know people who would be interested in buying this game but won't because they don't have the same amount of free time I have. While there will be other game modes (outpost), the prospects are a core part of the game design and if that's a mode you can't reasonably participate in that will shy you away from the game.
Thanks you for the informative reply, it is much appreciated.
I am a survival game junky so yeah that is me and I have friends to play with but truth be told I do like games that allow you to 'do your own thing' at times (i.e. Subnautica) where you just chill and zone out.
Just out of surgery on the neck so a bit o time to game so no worries there. I am running an i7 9900ks, 32 gb RAM, and an aging EVGA 1080ti FTW3 but that card is holding up well surprisingly still. That said do you think I would have issues based on the performance that you have seen so far? I can deal with reduced settings but my PC is also not exactly a potato and seems to handle New World decently (marker point as an example).
Again, I want to say thanks for the reply as it is very informative and I like when I see Steam communities where this is a thing. Maybe the type of game that draws a more mature audience but it still is a welcome thing and most appreciated.
Just had to play with some settings like field of view etc…
Good time sink it looks like and recovering from ACDF surgery so got the time. Again, thank you everyone and happy gaming!
Do you know if the standard game comes with Outposts? ( a change from June 11)
From your response above, are you saying that the game timer runs whether you play or not? So if I start a mission the timer goes for 20 days and doesn't stop when I log off?
