You don't. The game never had mouse look.

It's an old school game. Mouse look was minimal or non-existent. Its been that way even on the N64.

And here goes the point of contention... especially a shame, since Doom 64 Ex originally did support free look.

A shame really I played Doom 64 with GZdoom and that had mouse look. Its hard to go back to not having mouse look.

absolutely. this makes no sense.

Look at it this way, the original maps were not designed with freelook in mind... the placement of enemies, vertical height etc. Auto aim is enabled, so playing with freelook would actually make it more cumbersome.
theres not point looking vertically. because the game essentially shoots pillars in terms of "hit boxes" it doesnt matter where you aim, if you are horizontally on your enemy, you will hit them.

I got an idea. Since Doom 64 on Steam has a WAD file... why not simply use something like GZDoom or Zandronum to play the game?

Can't find it in the options, which is a damn shame considering that this is just an upgrade Doom 64 EX, which DID have a mouse look option as well as being able to enable autorun in the settings.

Press Caps Lock and it enables autorun.

Doom64 does stuff in the engine that source ports like Zandronum and GZDoom would require special cases for.

I'm aware of that, but it's something you have to do every time you start the game, which by itself is not a huge problem, if a little annoying. It was more a statement about, despite having the same lead developer as 64 EX, they removed so many small QOL improvements and features that were already present in what's essentially the preceding version to this.

No you don't? I enabled it once and it never disabled itself.

I stand corrected. You are right in that it doesn't not need to be re-enabled. However, the lack of mouse look and other features like autosaves (present in EX, but absent here) are a bummer. To its credit, it does seem to play much smoother on Windows 10, where EX had a but of smoothness issues after a certain update, at least in my experience.
