Doom 64 gave doom a well deserved visual upgrade as well as a brand new gun, story, and take on the mood and theme of the original. Overall Doom 64 was and is a more than adequate sequel to doom 2 with just the right amount of changes to make it feel fresh yet still linked to the original doom games.
