They are not, in the current state of the game everyone gets the same end game Hiram gear provided through the story line with all the items to upgrade throughout your journey. You decide early in the game which set cloth, leather, plate you are going to use and keep that set to the end so choose wisely.

ProTip, never get rid of your explorer gear. You upgrade that along the way before finally upgrading it to hiram. Prior to upgrading to Hiram, you can regrade the explorer gear to randomly assign stat bonuses. Once you upgrade to Hiram, those stat bonuses are stuck forever.

This means prior to hiram gear (roughly level 50), you can play around with the type of armor set you want, just make sure you NEVER destroy/delete your explorer gear (or your bow and instrument too).

There's a process to break down your explorer gear and have it kind of 'reset' into a different type. So you could breakdown cloth gear and make it leather, or plate.

This way you could have that battlerage male elf wearing cloth..or leather, or plate, depends on how you want to build your character (combined with what suits the skills you've chosen).

The process in breaking down gear and changing it is best described by watching youtube channels (I'm a noob overall).

Also there's two types of 'tiers' to each piece of gear. Never delete/destroy infusions or awaken scrolls. You need these!

I don't know proper names, so for example let's call them Tier A and Tier B.

Tier A) is the 'awakened' level of the gear. Initially explorer gear isn't awakened. First time you apply an awaken scroll to a piece of gear it increases the stats and also sets the minimum level to 28. Second time you apply an awakening scroll it sets the minimum level to 40 (i think). Third time it sets to level 50? Either the 3rd or 4th time you awaken it it turns into Hiram gear (highest I've got is level 45, so I don't know details).

Tier B) This is kind of the sub-level of the gear. There are 4 sub-levels for each level of awaken tear (A).

I.e. you can have Rare, Arcane, Heroic (I'm forgetting one, but heroic is the top level of this Tier B group). You upgrade this tier using the infusion item.

So, first you upgrade the gear with infusions, once you get the gear to Tier B level Heroic, then you can 'awaken' it to the next Tier A level. This resets the Tier B level (i.e. goes from heroic back to rare or whatever). Then have to upgrade Tier B until you get to Heroic before you can use the next level of Awakening scroll on it.

Hope that all makes sense. There are youtube videos that do a much better job of describing this, and yes it's confusing and yes you can screw up your pre-level 50 character by accidentally deleting explorer gear/infusions/awaken scrolls. Once you hit level 50+ you can farm mobs for Hiram gear, assuming you deleted a piece on accident or something prior (although I'm told this is a grindy process).
