I went from like 150-ish at the start of one run to like 2.8K at the end. Upgrades feel like they take forever but the thing is, you can beat the game without all the upgrades. It's just learning your safe moves, the patterns, ect.
Skul leans WAY more towards "skill" based rather than stat based. That, as well as the skulls you find. Those make a much bigger difference than something like having +40%Phys damage at all times. Sure the +40% is nice, but it's not going to Save you either.
- learn enemy patterns. There aren't that many diverse enemies so learning how they move/ attack let's you dodge their attacks/ projectiles
- the first time you see a Skull try picking it up and learn it's move-set and abilities. Also all Skull come with multiple abilities but only 1-2 active slots which can greatly improve or worsen it. Gargoyle with Stomp for example is hot garbage while Laser Eyes and Whirlwind are great clear tools that AoE kill normal enemies
- One of the first unlocks should be Upgrade to get iFrames on dodge since not taking damage keeps you alive to learn the pattern of your opponents
- Power Skulls are great to clear stages but generally suck against bosses > try to get either a balance Skull that scales with Magic or a Speed Skull with a nuke ability. Then just keep dodging opponent attacks and use your skills to clear/ kill the enemy
- Don't buy Common items in the shop since it's a waste of Money. The only exception would be item that generates gold based on how many items you carry from one map to another
- don't pick up any new Skull you see once you have a collection of items and it doesn't fit. For example having a lot of Crit and Physical boosting items means that you won't benefit from a Balance Skull that does magic damage and vice versa
- learn the importance of patience and don't run through the whole stage. walking to certain parts triggers enemy spawns > more enemies means more ways to die since you can't focus on all of them (especially true on the 2nd and 3rd stage where you'll be chipped down by projectiles)
- since the last patch there's also a Beginner Mode within the Options menu that gives you a passive +50% damage resist. You might need this in the beginning if you feel too squishy since you don't have any unlocks yet.
I myself honestly think that this game is too easy with a few exceptions when it comes to the level design for the 3rd stage and the final boss, but to each their own. The most important thing is to have fun
