Mainly try to get either something with massive damage-modifier on the Special and try for Special Hammers, or something with poke damage on the Attack and go for Attack Hammers. You'll attack whenever Special is on Cooldown.
The special can be good because you can aim it over walls if you try hard but it is kinda awkward to use correctly.
just don't get hit and you're golden
You will need to dodge with it like you are using a shorter range weapons, more so than with the bow. It's knockback effects are not reliable (even upgraded or modified) so find something that helps you deflect or return the "investment" on incurred damage. I'm also
always shocked by how different the apects' specials feel to me, mechanics wise, commit yourself to dying a lot (lol) and mess around with it.
It really rewards positioning yourself WELL
Most of the special hammers are a straight up massive increase in power. Particularly Hazard Bomb is the easiest of EZ modes at low heat. Just be aware of which ones you can stack, and make sure you take a Special boon with big damage % increase.
Attack hammers are a bit more difficult because they tend to be less of a jump in power. Instead you'll need to pick up an Attack boon that work well with the rapid fire attack. It'll be more difficult/slower than the flat up power increase of Special hammers, but you can eventually get the Attack to a point where it's good enough as your primary attack.
The word "eventually" pretty much sums up my issue with gun: The attack feels impotent unless one puts immense effort into it. Worse with Lucifer, as then it feels like I am hitting enemies with a soaker. Not a super-soaker, there is nothing super about it.
Made worse by the fact that I have to let go of the attack to Reload, Attack is stationary, and Zag does not want to reload during Dashes. So it is work to keep track of the ammo and to find good spots to fire from. That is just a bit too much busywork for me considering the damage output. Personal mileage may vary.
Not very coincidentally, removing the need to Reload is always what I take when I don't get any good Special Hammers. That is one issue removed, as then I can just Dash->Attack->Dash->Attack properly.
Tldr: I tend to use Shackle in Tartarus so I have actual damage output while searching for Boons to make the hits hurt while using Gun.
