The people who don't like it or think it's overrated mostly fall into two categories: 1) people who hate the core gameplay loop of this type of game where you die a lot at first and then play the same handful of levels (not really the same since the rooms are randomly generated, but same name, same art style, same boss) over and over again, or 2) people that who really like ridiculously massive amounts of power ups/upgrades like Binding of Isaac after however many DLCs, who sometimes feel that there are fewer of them in this game than they would prefer. This isn't an "every run will be drastically different even 300 hours in" game, but it has more than enough variety to keep you interested and to experiment with your builds for most people. Some of us actually prefer a more manageable amount of power ups because you eventually know what everything does without having to look it up somewhere and the fun is in experimenting with how they combine with each other.
The game is overwhelmingly loved and won several game of the year awards. The varied opinions you see are mostly the loud folks at the end of the bell curve. If you're into greek mythology, art & music, 2d action games, interesting narrative structures, or games with lots of replayability, you'll probably like it.
Safe to say I am playing non-stop every single day since as this is such a beautifully artistic roguelike with insane replay value, story and intricate details that keep it fresh each escape attempt. And the progression is really really good.
I played it for 14 hours straight on my first day and been playing daily since with over 80 hours in now, it's really really damn amazing to me and I'm so looking forward to the sequel.
No harm in trying it out I say.
Eurydice's songs
Not only are all of those amazing, even the songs that are just instrumentals are amazing, No Escape, Through Asphodel, God of the Dead are all absolutely incredible. I do hope that Ashley Barrett makes a return on some vocal tracks on the second one
That was my thought, like, 98% of almost 200,000 people thought the game was good. If that's what is considered varied opinions, what do you call an actual "mixed" reviews game.
The review: "Lol, didn't play."
"I guess opinions are split."
I'm guessing once I pick up momentum it'll get better. I definitely see why it has overwhelmingly positive reviews. It is very well done.
However, I'm finding that there's too many runs where the powers given are mediocre. That's really my only gripe about it. I'm fine with a challenge. I just don't feel like there's a ton of room for crafting builds because every power granted is something new I haven't seen before even though I'm many runs in, and they rarely seem to synergize.
This game gives you a TON more control over your builds than the other roguelikes I've played, but you probably haven't gotten that far. Keep upgrading your mirror and make sure to give each of the gods a nectar.
