Hades
Should I get this game?
I know that opinions on this game are relatively varied, but I'd still like to know what some of the players of this game think. I'm also very new to rogue-likes(or roguelites, whichever you prefer I suppose), so I'm not sure what to expect.

UPDATE-
I have purchased the game, played over 10 hours, and am already in love with this game. Fell in love with the fists(Malphon I think?), and refuse to try and use the ranged weapons. Had bad experiences with the bow and gun, but I guess I just don't really have the patience to use them. I thank you guys for your responses.

It is an exceptional example in nearly all regards. If there's any rogue-lite to get, this is definitely near/at the top.

if you aren't big on roguelikes but like a good story and character you'll probably enjoy it

If you like roguelikes/roguelites, this is an outstanding example of the genre that genuinely innovated in areas like how to incorporate a narrative into the roguelike formula and how to scale difficulty in this type of game, with exceptional art, music, and voice acting. It does it so well that many people who aren't normally roguelike fans love the game, too.

The people who don't like it or think it's overrated mostly fall into two categories: 1) people who hate the core gameplay loop of this type of game where you die a lot at first and then play the same handful of levels (not really the same since the rooms are randomly generated, but same name, same art style, same boss) over and over again, or 2) people that who really like ridiculously massive amounts of power ups/upgrades like Binding of Isaac after however many DLCs, who sometimes feel that there are fewer of them in this game than they would prefer. This isn't an "every run will be drastically different even 300 hours in" game, but it has more than enough variety to keep you interested and to experiment with your builds for most people. Some of us actually prefer a more manageable amount of power ups because you eventually know what everything does without having to look it up somewhere and the fun is in experimenting with how they combine with each other.

The game is overwhelmingly loved and won several game of the year awards. The varied opinions you see are mostly the loud folks at the end of the bell curve. If you're into greek mythology, art & music, 2d action games, interesting narrative structures, or games with lots of replayability, you'll probably like it.

I never played a roguelike before Hades, but I bought the game just about a week ago because the trailer for Hades 2 was so beautifully crafted that it got me super interested and excited for the IP.

Safe to say I am playing non-stop every single day since as this is such a beautifully artistic roguelike with insane replay value, story and intricate details that keep it fresh each escape attempt. And the progression is really really good.

I played it for 14 hours straight on my first day and been playing daily since with over 80 hours in now, it's really really damn amazing to me and I'm so looking forward to the sequel.

No harm in trying it out I say.

gotta say this was my first roguelikes/roguelites and I love it and have continued to love it even after months

it's what got me into roguelikes/lites, would recommend it to anybody who likes a good story, excellent voice acting, good and enjoyable gameplay and the thought of "just one more run and I'll go to bed" at 3 am

Short answer? Absolutely. Even more so given the context presented in your post. Hades on base difficulty/no heat is much easier than most roguelikes/lites on the market. However, with the Pact of Punishment it can become one of the more difficult Roguelites on the market. It also has a ♥♥♥♥ load of content and unlike most other games in the genre, there is a very, very extensive story with excellent writing, some breath taking art, and it does a great job adapting its source materials. Oh and don't even get me started on how amazing the soundtrack is.

Not only are all of those amazing, even the songs that are just instrumentals are amazing, No Escape, Through Asphodel, God of the Dead are all absolutely incredible. I do hope that Ashley Barrett makes a return on some vocal tracks on the second one :zagpls:

That was my thought, like, 98% of almost 200,000 people thought the game was good. If that's what is considered varied opinions, what do you call an actual "mixed" reviews game.

*Frank the Fun-hating Contrarian doesn't recommend this game.*
The review: "Lol, didn't play."

"I guess opinions are split."

I love roguelikes. I love Greek mythology. I'm finding it difficult to enjoy the game.

I'm guessing once I pick up momentum it'll get better. I definitely see why it has overwhelmingly positive reviews. It is very well done.

However, I'm finding that there's too many runs where the powers given are mediocre. That's really my only gripe about it. I'm fine with a challenge. I just don't feel like there's a ton of room for crafting builds because every power granted is something new I haven't seen before even though I'm many runs in, and they rarely seem to synergize.

This game gives you a TON more control over your builds than the other roguelikes I've played, but you probably haven't gotten that far. Keep upgrading your mirror and make sure to give each of the gods a nectar.
