Don't buy the fishing pole
In 20 encounters I've had 1 that I can actually fish it it is a waste of a diamond.

First, diamonds aren't that rare, so spending one for the rod isn't a big deal.

Second, no. It's way too valuable to ignore.

Over twenty screens no fishing point has spawned which makes it useless. Yes I know what one looks like.

There's 69 chambers per full run. You're expected to make dozens, if not over a hundred complete runs through the game.

So you've completed less than 1/3 of a run and call it useless...

Its always worth buying given that some fish in later areas just flatout give you a diamond for turning them in.

Also you can up the fish chances by a lot by trying to go for Poseidon's legendary fishing boon(every room has a 1/5 chance to have fish in it).
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

This is, perhaps, the absolute worst advice you could give for this game.

I can understand why someone who bought the fishing rod early and hasn't progressed much in the game would consider the rod useless. At the beginning of the game, a diamond is a scarce and valuable commodity, and the gems that you get for the common early fishes seem to be worth almost nothing.

That said, I think most people are probably aware of the "1 diamond for 100 gems" exchange at the broker by the time they get the fishing rod. So it becomes clear pretty quickly that even if you catch only fish that are worth 5-20 gems, the rod will eventually pay for itself, and help you make a profit afterwards. And once you notice that there are fish that give you keys, nectar, or diamonds straight away, getting the rod becomes a no-brainer.

The fishing rod already paid for it self. When you beat the game and go to your mothers house on the top river I caught a bass and it gave me a diamond.
When you finish clearing a room you'll hear a distinguished dinging sound. Once you hear that look around and i'll find a place to fish.
In order for you to fish correctly you have to wait until the buoys dips under the water. Once it does click on E and you'll catch your fish.

Summary of the conversation: If you're planning to keep polishing this game long after it's beat, buy the fishing rod. If you've got a diamond or more and just want to beat the final boss, hold out for a better trade since you're not planning to grind through the same slightly modified content for dozens of hours.

PS: Love the gameplay, but I'd heard great things about the "story" through dialogue. Most of the dialogue is just Gods talking sh!t to each other.

Diamonmds are there for wasting.
There is a reason most of those are spent on unlocking songs you'll never play.
