You can actually see it is a one time use, that is why there is a (1) in a circular arrow when you equip it.
There is another caveat: Hermes and Hammer upgrades are counted separately. So, a Hermes boon is not replaced by this. Shop boons aren't replaced as well. I believe Infernal Gates aren't replaced, either.
What he said. It has a counter on it, and it makes sense if you read it: "the next boon will be from this god", not "the first boon in each zone will be from this god" or something.
I'm not entirely sure how it counts if you skip the god when they appear (multiple choices for next room for example). It seems that if I skip them to take a chaos/erebus gate they're still the next god, but I haven't tested if I skip them with normal rooms to take, say, a Daedalus hammer.
I can vouch for this. I used to switch keepsake a lot early on to force specific build to learn. After Tartarus it is very rare for the first boon to be the new keepsake.
For the record, I wasn't expecting ALL the boons to be from the same God, just the first one in each new zone.
I didn't know the Hermes override so that is interesting, I also never recognized the 1 in the circular arrow. Those are useful tidbits. Obviously the game is amazing, and i would say near perfect, I just think it would be simple to clarify the trinket usage so the confusion does not arise. (obviously the confusion may not arise in everyone, but I am certain it is there for some).
Sorry for necroing the thread, but I just wanted to say that I sometimes have the same problem too and I'm not sure whether it's a bug or what. I switched trinkets from Athena to Zeus, I have 1 on my trinket counter, I am in the first room of Asphodel, and next room is Hermes... https://i.imgur.com/kTIdPFT.png
Maybe actually read the thread? It's not even a page long. That's not a bug.
Hermes isn't a normal god in any way, so he doesn't count for the trinket.
