Guan Yu is probably the worst weapon in the entire game. Like, I'm certain it can be scientifically proven.
Wondering if it's actually good once it's max upgraded to offset the health debuff a bit. Also spin attack *is* an attack so I can see it maybe being good with the Athena attack deflect boon, or zeus attack boon. Does seem to make half the Gods' attack boons go complete ass tho.
It doesn't seem any better than any other weapon - can only assume people that sing its praises are the types that lose health fairly regularly in encounters to begin with. Lifesteal would be well worth in that case.
I personally think the attack/lifesteal was always some kind of gimmick, but the special really was a game changer. Special + Charged skewer + any +% boon was the way to go. Not to mention, Chaos had fewer boons to offer so that sweet + special damage appeared more likely.
People like to play the spear because of the range options. You get to control your engagements and even tackle far off enemies.
Guan Yu just raises the risks and offers little in return.
Keep in mind part of the game is about escalating danger so, it might just be that its really meant for hardcore players getting some variety, like they can with the pact.
It feels like the only way to not win with it is running out of time with tight deadline. Pretty much all enemies can be abused for free healing. Fish for the charged attack hammers (4 variants to choose from: bigger+more damage, lasting longer, faster charge, sturdy) and add a fancy attack effect (probably just Athena but any high % multiplier works too like Aphro).
Free sustain is broken, I don't really feel like the reduced health is much of an issue either. You'll still stack health whenever possible just so you have a decent buffer. Once you're in a range where you have to mess up multiple times quickly in a row in order to die you'll just not lose health anymore...
The only issue with it is that it's freaking boring to just spam charged attacks...
Just don't try to fight charon.
This means you can play relatively safe, and use spin attack to keep your self up. Ideal setup is to also one of the guan yu aspects or quick spin, this keeps you at 100% HP in most situations except bosses which then depends on player skill.
At high heat with attack speed/harder healing Guan Yu starts sucking though.
