Upgrades that you DON'T want.
Hey, I just wondered. There are some upgrades I never take because I think they actually make me weaker (in combination with my playstyle).

For example: The bow upgrade that gives you two shots but has a shorter range. I know it can be powerful, but it just doesn't fit my playstyle. I tried it a few times and I always felt it like it ruined my run.

What are the upgrades that YOU don't want to take?

Similar to you. I use cast for the boiling blood modifier, so I avoid Demeter’s laser crystal boon. I also tend to avoid boons that affect dash/special, because I’m just not good at landing those.

Triple attack fist boon seems foul, the overcheap chop attack with sword seems foul, the "infinite shot but damage doesnt ramp up" for gun seems foul. -60% max hp & Hp drain per hit on Xcalibur is terrible.

Boon wise I really don't like any of the cast types that change the cast entirely so it no longer attached to enemies, like Blade Rift or Demeter Crystal. Trippy Shot is an exception since it has it's own perk to make up and works without too much extra hassle or me having to chase Ares for 3-4 more boons to make Blade Rift actually work out.

Also Pose knockback boon on attack feels really awful for melee weapons during Aspohodel, and long term I come to regret having Poseidon attack when I get to last 2 bosses.

I just copy my comment from another thread.

In my experience, there are several worthwhile hammer boons for the bow. I will try to rank them from best chance to escape to decent chance to escape. (Reminder: This is all my subjective opinion)

Best: Flurry Shot (Attack), Relentless Volley (Special)

Good: Twin Shot (Attack), Perfect Shot (Attack), Concentrated Volley (Special)

Decent: Explosive Shot (Attack), Piercing Volley (Special)

Combination boons: Sniper Shot (Attack), Chain Shot (Attack)

The worst: Triple Shot (Attack), Point-Blank Shot (Attack), Charged Volley (Special)

I havent tried out Repulse Shot yet.

Thats my current experience with the bow. The best ones can usually carry you through the game, the good ones need a little bit more skill for an escape and the decent ones need quite alot. Combination boons i never take first and the worst are just the worst. Triple Shot needs proper positioning and then its basically just Twin Shot. Point-Blank Shot doesnt work for any playstile for the bow. If you go melee range then you want to use the special and dash away, not load up a powershot and if you have Flurry + Point-Blank... then you missed something. Charged Volley is just way too slow and would only be useful on Chiron, but that aspect cant get it.

Overall i never have problems to find a proper hammer upgrade combination.

I used to avoid certain boons, like Crush Shot, for this reason. However, now that v1.0 changed things and we can see what boon combos lead to which advanced boons, I often go for those "bad" boons deliberately because they lead to something devastating down the line.

Which makes sense, right? If something is going to be crazy when upgraded, it makes sense to make it appear a little unattractive at first so you feel like you earned its late benefits when you were paying your dues in the early stages.

Weapon upgrades are the same: they can seem iffy at first, but then you stack with maybe one extra Daedalus tool or a certain boon and the "bad" effect becomes this amazing thing.

I don't know about avoiding, but I always aim for Aphrodite's call and Athena's dash. I'm also fond of Dio's cast.

The overhead chop with sword paired with atremis crit is a absolute boss melter my guy :)
you could also mix doom with it for a big hit then a big doom hit and let you run away safely

pretty much anything Ares. Such a trash god.
Bogan Oct 7, 2020 @ 8:36pm
Zeus is my least desired of all the Gods probably.

I dislike any casts that don't allow me to mark for death with the mirror power.

There are lots of crappy hammer upgrades like the short range bow you mentioned. The ranged shield charge replacement is awful, that thing caused my death at the final boss when I traded my 1 hammer upgrade for 2 randoms.

I don't want knock back sometimes depending on my build so I might avoid Poseidon effects if they're hurting my sustained DPS. For example I got the shotgun Railgun recently and my dash caused push back. It kept the enemies out of my range often so I purged that dash ASAP and the run was smooth sailing from there.

If you do big slow AOE attacks (Gun's special), his doom modifier is great especially if have additional boons like impending doom on it. Makes Elysium and Styx easier.

Doom is great with any shield. Dash charge, turn around, charge (and block attacks), charge again.

It's a very reliable and defensive way to play.

That stupid upgrade that makes Demeter's cast target you. I ruined my run with that one. I guess I sacrificed that run for achievement, but it was so bad. I built everything to affect cast that run. 5 casts, double drops, + damage, etc. and then I made them useless just before last boss battle... Still salty about that.

Also sometimes I feel like the slow from +10 frost is more valuable than 90 damage you get from the explosion

For me personally:
- Bow explosive shot
- Rail delta chamber
- Sword cursed slash
- Fist three attack combo

It's not stupid, it's awesome. Pure backstab damage, if used correctly. Amp up beam time and power if you can, and then it's a matter of placing the gem and moving away from it past the enemy so that either you or the gem are scoring backstab damage. Very useful against shield-bearers in Elysium, and even against the bosses if you get it hyped enough.

The only upgrades I've found to be the most difficult to use are:

Demeter / Aphrodite Duo Boon: Unlike other Duo Boons this one needs quite a lot of supporting boons to be good.

3-Hit Fist Hammer upgrade: This could probably be combo'd with Artemis and Chaos boons to do some decent damage, but at the same time you're playing against the strengths of the weapon until you have a perfect setup. This is competing against hammer upgrades and boons that are immediately very strong on their own.

As for Cursed Slash: This is a bit of an early game trap. You need quite a bit of starting hit points from before and during the run, but if you get this and the sword combo attack this can let you brute force pretty much every fight. Usually if I run this I would also be grabbing things that help reduce damage like Aphrodite and Athena Boons. Demeter is also a good choice for this kind of setup.
