Boon wise I really don't like any of the cast types that change the cast entirely so it no longer attached to enemies, like Blade Rift or Demeter Crystal. Trippy Shot is an exception since it has it's own perk to make up and works without too much extra hassle or me having to chase Ares for 3-4 more boons to make Blade Rift actually work out.
Also Pose knockback boon on attack feels really awful for melee weapons during Aspohodel, and long term I come to regret having Poseidon attack when I get to last 2 bosses.
Which makes sense, right? If something is going to be crazy when upgraded, it makes sense to make it appear a little unattractive at first so you feel like you earned its late benefits when you were paying your dues in the early stages.
Weapon upgrades are the same: they can seem iffy at first, but then you stack with maybe one extra Daedalus tool or a certain boon and the "bad" effect becomes this amazing thing.
you could also mix doom with it for a big hit then a big doom hit and let you run away safely
I dislike any casts that don't allow me to mark for death with the mirror power.
There are lots of crappy hammer upgrades like the short range bow you mentioned. The ranged shield charge replacement is awful, that thing caused my death at the final boss when I traded my 1 hammer upgrade for 2 randoms.
I don't want knock back sometimes depending on my build so I might avoid Poseidon effects if they're hurting my sustained DPS. For example I got the shotgun Railgun recently and my dash caused push back. It kept the enemies out of my range often so I purged that dash ASAP and the run was smooth sailing from there.
If you do big slow AOE attacks (Gun's special), his doom modifier is great especially if have additional boons like impending doom on it. Makes Elysium and Styx easier.
Doom is great with any shield. Dash charge, turn around, charge (and block attacks), charge again.
It's a very reliable and defensive way to play.
and regret anything bad i ever said about casts and Ares. It absolutely demolished last boss.
Also sometimes I feel like the slow from +10 frost is more valuable than 90 damage you get from the explosion
- Bow explosive shot
- Rail delta chamber
- Sword cursed slash
- Fist three attack combo
It's not stupid, it's awesome. Pure backstab damage, if used correctly. Amp up beam time and power if you can, and then it's a matter of placing the gem and moving away from it past the enemy so that either you or the gem are scoring backstab damage. Very useful against shield-bearers in Elysium, and even against the bosses if you get it hyped enough.
Demeter / Aphrodite Duo Boon: Unlike other Duo Boons this one needs quite a lot of supporting boons to be good.
3-Hit Fist Hammer upgrade: This could probably be combo'd with Artemis and Chaos boons to do some decent damage, but at the same time you're playing against the strengths of the weapon until you have a perfect setup. This is competing against hammer upgrades and boons that are immediately very strong on their own.
As for Cursed Slash: This is a bit of an early game trap. You need quite a bit of starting hit points from before and during the run, but if you get this and the sword combo attack this can let you brute force pretty much every fight. Usually if I run this I would also be grabbing things that help reduce damage like Aphrodite and Athena Boons. Demeter is also a good choice for this kind of setup.
