Am I wasting Nectar?

I keep giving it to Charon, hoping to fill it all the way up, but doesn't seem to do anything?

Well, in general, Nectar helps you build your relationship with NPCs and allows you to progress their questlines. That being said, there are more exciting opportunities to do this than Charon - if you ask me.

You get tons of Nectar as you go, don't sweat it.
Just keep giving em to everyone possible, eventually you run out of NPCs to hand them to anyway.

No trick. You just get a lot during the game, from completing Fates to just collecting them as you go.

You'll hit a point at which you have plenty (relatively speaking) of every resource you desire. It's just a matter of time. Be patient.

Tbh I just finished giving every NPC one nectar and I'm trying to find who I'm gonna give it to. Probably Eurydice and Orpheus to learn more about their relationship and I wanna hear Orpheus sing ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Eurydice voice was such a welcoming surprised in the depth of Asphodel.

initially, you want to give nectar once to everyone (including gods) for their keepsakes, and then give it to whoever you wish

some plotlines can't develop until characters get enough nectar, so after you get a keepsake there's no real way to 'waste' it

You will get a lot of nectar eventually so don't sweat it... even though you give a lot of nectar to specific character all the time... His / her quest usually still locked long before you can't give them nectar anymore

As Skelly says, don't expect anything in return, at least after the first time. Assuming you have given nectar to each character you can, I wouldn't consider any of it a waste, you are free to decide who you want to get closer to. It is also worth noting that it is impossible to waste nectar: once you have given them all they can get, the option will disappear and they will simply not accept more.

As a general rule of thumb, you should give everyone one nectar before you start doubling up.

But there are a few companions where giving them multiple nectar is very beneficial. Off the top of my head, it's like Thanatos, Magaera, Dusa... maybe Sisyphus and/or Bouldy...

Upon looking at the codex you can see which character will give you something in exchange of nectars, so aim for that first. Otherwise, spend it, this is how you progress in the rogue light meta game.
