i didn't like the combat in pyre at all. bastion was alright. transistor and hades are fantastic.
love this game
The first three games are close, but Pyre isn't even in the same league as the others. The game play was lacking (it's mainly a point and click adventure) and the results of your matches had little to no consequence on the story progression. Add the lack of extra modes to build on the "sports game" approach and I would say it's easily their worst title.
As far as world building, theme and the rest are concerned I would gauge them as equal. But if a game isn't fun to play, it doesn't really qualify (in my opinion).
N/A because I haven't played Transistor or Pyre.
Downloaded the free (w/ Hades) promotional copy of Pyre, but I have a backlog (including Hades, which has taken around 120 of my hours so far).
Started with Bastion some years back. Enjoyed it, but it was also some button-mashing hell at the same time. Nice art, great narrator, excellent controls - but my thumbs got tired, so I moved on.
Hades can be a bit button-mashy as well - but it has its casual moments, and that balances things out.
Also, I'm a genuine Slay the Spire junkie - and Hades gives me an action-based means to scratch that same itch.
Hades, of course, isn't even finished yet. I don't think my favorable opinion will go sour as the production reaches completion; it may improve further. We'll see.
Haven't played Hades yet and am waiting for it to leave early access on Steam.
Pyre and Bastion are on the same level for me
Hades: Still extremely good but not a big fan of Roguelites.
gameplay and story are terrific too.
I remember bastion being amazing for 2011, but objectively hades does everything better. sometimes it even copies bastion.
I remember liking pyre, but I completely forgot about it. must not have been that great for me.
Music tier: Pyre > Bastion > Transistor > Hades
I love Darren Korb's music, but just can't get into Korb's interpretation of Orpheus voice.
2. Bastion
3. Transistor
I'm much more for action games with high execution or skill ceilings so that's why I liked Hades and Bastion more. I don't know if I'll buy Pyre or have time to play it.
Huh
Hades > Bastion + Pyre + Transistor
Gameplay-wise I just couldn't really get into Bastion, but I really appreciated its atmosphere and the Zulf sequence near the end elevated the experience. It's nowhere near my fave game of the year (I played Supergiant's entire catalog for the first time this year), but I've thought about it and the five hours I spent with it more than some other games I played for over 50 hours.
Transistor felt more comfortable to play because I fare better with turn-based combat. I have to admit that I wasn't super into the way the story was delivered, but the relationship between Transistor and Red was compelling all the way through. It's an interesting game, I really need to go back to it and read the character bios with more thought.
Pyre's just something special and made me appreciate Supergiant on a new level. I like visual novels and point&click adventure games so Pyre was bound to be my jam. The wonderful art direction and intricate world made it even better. It was more character-driven which I *loved* and made me seriously consider my choices based on what I knew about the cast. It's the only Supergiant game I had to play on PC and let's just say I appreciate that the story keeps going whether you win or lose, because I'm not used to playing with M+KB and ended up failing half of the rites. It did feel like the game started to run out of steam after a while but I was still blown away.
Hades is just all around good time. Out of the four games it feels the best to play, I like its positive take on failure and perseverance (resonates a lot given what this year has been like). It just takes a lot of dedication and time to see all the great story elements and the runs can feel a bit samey after tens of hours... But those tens of hours have been a lot of fun and the story and character stuff fulfilling (Achilles's side quest and those first escapes were so moving!). To me, it has been a challenging game, but the game's taking my struggles into account and keeps encouraging me to keep going... that's something special and something I'll remember for a long time.
And honestly, I think all four are memorable experiences in their own ways.
