We have plans to do more with Darkness in our coming updates, so we're not finished with it yet. Other aspects of the resource economy of the game will likely evolve as we add more content and make additional changes.
For now, in normal mode, Darkness helps many players in the early game as they learn the ropes and start being able to progress further in their escape attempts. Longer term, once the Mirror is mostly maxed out, you can use Darkness for some trades at the Wretched Broker.
I ran out of uses for keys ages ago, having unlocked all the weapons and all the Mirror Upgrades. I'm still about 1600 Darkness away from unlocking the fourth Fated Authority, and I'm not sure if there's a fifth one but if there is, that means I'm 6600 away from completing it.
Darkness trade-in is not a persistent option, but it shows up occasionally as the limited option.
I saw someone who said it goes up to 10 and the last one costs 50.000 darkness lol.
It doesn't go that high. It stops at 4 or 5.
