Spear with Hades aspect: get faster spin from Daedalus. Achilles: get strong cast, use the Rush ability and then cast / spin attack. Zag aspect: get chain special from Daedalus and try to go for just a decent build overall.
I've had success with both attack and special. For regular attack spam, Aphrodite, Athena, or Poseidon. For special, Daedalus Multi Skewer (7 bounces) + Ares' Doom on special hit.
Just managed to beat Hades. I tried the ranged Spear build and it was quite good until Hades himself destroyed me, but luckily I found success with the Shield now.
Which of the bow aspects is the easier (to have success with) one?
Thank you all.
For the bow, Hera can reduce at lv max to 5 seconds the Cast drop. Further with Artemis' upgrade. You can spam your Casts like that and nuke stuff. Shotgun with Special meanwhile.
About spear: What I find about it actually is that both Spin and Special are slow clearers, Spin is kiiiind of cumbersome. Instead what I do myself is get the upgrading hammers for attack and "attack, dash, dash attack, attack, dash..." around stuff. I prefer a Zeus build of all things with that strategy.
The throw is relatively easy to make good. The Zag aspect when leveled up turns it into a viable attack. A good hammer mod that buffs it will make it excellent.
Another option for the throw is to go Achilles aspect and get yourself a good cast. Like Aphrodite's. Charge to the spear and use the damage buff to make your casts extra hard hitting. Then do the usual poking and dodge attacking until the bloodstones drop.
Hades aspect is actually very good. The debuff is strong and lasts a very long time. So you end up finding those openings to get a quick spin hit in.
The Daedalus mods can make either of the clunky attacks useful. Get the faster charge up and the spin becomes a mainstay. Exploding and richocheting spear throw are both very nice. Though don't get richocheting spear with Achilles aspect.
The first thing you really need to understand is that the spear is a medium range weapon. If you're too far from the enemy it's terrible. If you're too close it's also terrible.
The second basic thing you need to know is that the spear is what I refer to as a disjointed weapon meaning the special and normal attack don't fit play well together (spear and bow (unless you have the tracking aspect) are disjointed, gun and sword are conjoined, finally shield varies depending on aspect). Because of this if you're just looking for a solid play style and don't care too much about min maxing you need to focus on JUST the base attac + spin or JUST the special in your build and this usually means you're focusing solely on your base attack + spin.
So now that you're focusing on just base attack plus spin let's talk about your core move set. I have to start by saying that your special at base is a terrible damage source and you should never use it. Sure maybe there are some cases where it can snipe a far away low hp caster but normally just don't bother. If you want to play a bit more optimally you can get something like weak or exposed on your special but it's not necessary.
So now this leaves us with just the dash attack, the spin attack, and the base jab. Let's take a look at each of these skills:
Base Jab - A forward line attack that does good damage. The damage per attack is low but the volume of attack is great. Pretty straightforward move, it's pretty fun to line a few unarmored enemies up and just stun lock them. Some Daedalus upgrades have a huge effect on this attack so look out for those. Over all you mostly want to use this when you know you have a little bit of time to sit still and just wail on an enemy.
Dash Attack - A lot of people seem to be in love with the spears dash attack but I don't really see the big deal. It only does slightly more damage than your jab and is a lot slower. Use this as a filler attack to push more damage while your dodging.
Spin Attack - I feel like this is the move that separates mediocre spear users from good spear users. First I have to point at that you can dash while you have your spin charged to cover more area, practice this because it's very important. The spin attack has 3 main uses, let's start with the simplest one to cover which is:
1. To keep your Hades aspect debuff applied. Personally I think Hades aspect is the best aspect for spear just because +160% damage is a gigantic number. If you're spinning JUST to apply the debuff let it charge just enough to do a small spin to hit your target quickly. If you're wanting to use Hades Aspect practice the timing for a small spin a bit to get it down.
2. Stuffs spawning in and you have a second to just wait for it to spawn in. During this time you can just charge your spin so that it's at max as soon as stuff spawns in. This is really strong in Tartarus where 100 damage tends to be enough to clear a lot of enemies and a lot of standard encounters just get hosed by this there. This is still a good strategy beyond Tartarus but the later the run goes the less effective it is.
3. There's an enemy that's a decent ways away and you have a second to charge up a spin. You can just charge it up while the enemy(ies) approach and release it once they're close enough. Similar concept to point 2 but with enemies that are still alive.
The special build is usually something that happens when you pick up an early Daedalus hammer which results in something like big crits on special or exploding special. I would say this is only the correct approach in about 20% of runs and when it is correct I can say with confidence that you will know early on that it's a special focused run. Special builds are far less complex than standard builds with the spear and they mostly boil down to just stay far away and spam your special.
Finally I have one last note and this applies to every weapon in my opinion not just the spear. As long as your boon choices are okay and nothing really bizarre every build option is good enough and can definitely suffice as long as you know how to pilot your weapon well in it's most basic form. Just pick boons that make sense and the build is fine, there's no need to force specific stuff where you need x and y and z so you can cheese the boss. With any weapon just focus on mastering the basic mechanics of the armament and you'll find moderate success.
Specific builds are something to worry about on much higher difficulties and trying to force really strong builds when you can't even pilot a weapon on its own may feel good in the short term but eventually you'll find yourself at a point where you're thinking " man I just can't clear 10 heat with the spear, maybe this isn't really a good build" when in reality you just never learned to actually use the weapon. Basically focus on the core move set, not the build.
I will however note that with any weapon if I'm out of it and just want a simple build that's reliable and effective I just force Aphrodite buff on my main attack source. Personally I think Aphrodite's super over powered and at the same time kinda underrated. I'm not gonna explain the math here because it involves frequency of chaos gates and what they give as well as how those chaos gates effect Artemis buffs. Don't worry about that, if you just want a solid run that has nothing crazy going on to worry about just take Aphrodite on every weapon.
NEVER USE THE CHARGED SWEEP MOVE IT MAKES YOU TAKE DMG YOU COULD OTHERWISE AVOID.
basic attacks on enemies that dont have armor stagger anyways. the weakness of the spear is that it lacks AOE and you can be swarmed, but not as hard as the bow, which sucks monkey butt.
if you feel like you dont do dmg its because the game has huge enemy hp bars. keep at it and chip them down, because sometimes minibosses become common enemies in the next zone.(cough cough bombers)
