Not everything that you will get is visible at the start, because you have to advance story with various characters to acquire certain rewards. Eventually you will get new weapons and dramatic abilities for those weapons, as well as magical items that give you constant benefits, and even drone AIs that assist you in battle.
For now, don't worry about dying. You're meant to do that. Your efforts are never wasted, since the only things you leave behind on death are gold and boons. Everything else, you bring back to the underworld with you and gets used to buy advancement in the game. I know it feels really cruel at first but you're going to hit a point where you become super tough and you intentionally take on extra challenges to make the game harder again (in exchange for bigger rewards).
[edit] Oh, and... If you switch on God Mode (can be toggled on/off), you get a little increment of damage reduction every time you "lose", so you can get stronger that way too if you want
