Hades II

Hades II

Crashes on Steam Deck
I've played this game for fifty minutes and I've got 5 machine crashes in a row. I've tried to launch the game with Proton 9 and Experimental but I get a crash every 3 rooms.

If it helps to resolve some issues, I have installed the game on the SSD card and I play on the official dock.

Update : It works perfectly out of the box

Hi there, glad to hear you're able to get into the game! In case there's something we can do to help prevent other users from encountering this, would you be able to share how you ended up fixing the issue? Thank you!

I have a similar issue, how did you fix it? Just constant crashes

I hear talk that using the Experimental branch of Proton 9 helps immensely.

Not sure how to do that , don't own a Steam Deck
I respond for the both of you

I have launched the game on the Steam Deck desktop with the proton 8 version.

However, I still got a crash but it was *game* crash and not *machine* crash, in 1 hour session. (At least, it resolves the machine crash issue.)

It's a temporary solution, it will not prevent crashes but it isn't painful.

I'll make some tests this morning on the desktop version with Proton 9 and Experimental, use a chronometer to know when I get a crash and update this thread with my notes.

Oh, and for the game dev, if you needed it, I could send you the HadesII.log in the end of my tests. I know what I will do is not an ideal game test protocol, but if it helps ...
Proton 9 force compatibility tool desktop session update :

I have encountered one crash in 1 hour session at 35 minutes and 34 secondes on my chronometer.

I discovered that the game crash has freezed the Desktop Steam Deck and Desktop Tool Bar but not the file explorer nor the Steam Launcher.

I have made copies from my differents logs just in case.

I discovered too that the game hasn't save my game correctly, so I've lost any progression between the game launch session and the game crash. I don't know if it's related to the crash or if it's due to my internet connection with Steam Cloud. -> 10:43 pm : With a normal quit, the game progression is saved.

I will take a little break and continue tests later.

Ok, thank you for the updates. Can you send your logs over to support@supergiantgames.com? Thank you!
Mail sent, glad to help the team.

I figured out that lost progression due to game crashes could be restored if you rename profile1_temp.sav by profile1.sav (and thank god, the restoration works perfectly, I will be sad to beat the third boss again with the same equipement.)

Thank you for sending those over! We'll get them looked through.

I've noticed a handful of other users reporting instability with their Steam Decks, but the fixes were unique to their devices. One had a modified file that he had to fix, for example.

It could be worth trying a couple things on your Steam Deck while we investigate -
- Full power cycle the device. Shut it down then turn it back instead of Sleep/Restart.
- Check for Steam OS updates. Steam button > Settings >System > Check for updates > Apply (if any).
- Investigate connected peripherals, if any.
- Maybe some files were affected during installation. Try Steam button > Hades II > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.

Just to report that I have had a whole system crash three times now with Hades II on Steam Deck.

I played the Playtest and had no crashes at all.

The first system-level crash happened when dying to the final boss of the second biome. On restarting the Steam Deck, the run had been lost.

I then forced compatibility version to Proton 9 GE in the hopes it might help, and played two successful runs, one of which got past the second boss no trouble.

The third run gave me another system level crash having beaten the second biome boss.

Between these I have done full system restarts. I have verified integrity of game files and no issues have been found.

I was limiting the TDP of the Steam Deck to 10watts, so I will try disabling this.

How do I extract logs to send over?

You can extract Hades II.log on your file explorer via /home/deck/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compdata/1145350/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Saved Games/Hades II

/!\ Before reading the next section, I play without Steam Cloud and I make save backup, be careful with save manipulation /!\

And if you crash again before relaunching the game and in the same place where you find the Hades II.log you can make a copy of the Profile1_Temp.sav ; rename the copy by Profile1.sav and overwrite the original Profile1.sav
It will avoid the loss progression due to the crash by placing you in the start of the room just before the crash

And launch the game with the Steam Deck Desktop's version, it will avoid system crashes

/!\ Of course, it will not resolves crashes issues but it will make them less painful /!\

The Steam Deck logs we'd need sent to support@supergiantgames.com are found at the following locations:
/home/deck/.steam/logs/console_log.txt
Desktop Mode/Dolphin/Hades II/Hades II.log

The second log is the same location that blue lobster enjoyer shared, condensed down to how it's displayed in Dolphin shorthand.

We've seen a spike in stability issues since the latest Steam Deck OS update this week. It may help to stay in the stable channel on the Steam layer (and Decky loader, if using that).

Here's a Github issue for reference. https://github.com/SteamDeckHomebrew/decky-loader/issues/621

The game crashes on my deck right after the first cut scene every single time. Restarts the deck in Default mode, crashes the game in Desktop mode. I've tried all possible combinations of:
- default settings
- lowering visuals to Medium
- disabling VSync (saw this and prev.one on Reddit)
- forced compatibility with proton 9.0
- forced compatibility with proton 8 ULWGL
- forced compatibility with proton experimental

Nothing works. Best I've got was having the first room rendered (without the main character though, IDK if he's supposed to be there).

Please help, I bought the game just to play it on Steam Deck :(

I have ~35 hours and started getting a lot more crashes as of recent. unless I'm mistaken, for a good 20-25 hours I maybe experienced a crash once or twice. but it grew to a point where it was maybe once every two or three runs; and it completely wiped that runs progress far more often as time progressed. forced compatability with proton 8 and have about 2 hours since. I was able to do a LOT in that two hours before it crashed at the end, it was a lot more reliable than without forced use - and switching to desktop and replacing that save with the temp worked perfectly for me. sent my logs before switching as well.

Hi all, we've released a couple fixes that should help with these stability issues on Steam Deck. If you're still experiencing several crashes, I'd recommend starting wish a fresh install. Please continue to post here if you're still experiencing issues after a fresh install of today's hotfix V 0.90993. Thank you!
