Even for non-combat purposes, the Calls were better in 1 as
A: Each call was unique to each God, adding flavor to each Ultimate basically.
B: Having an ultimate wasn't necessary for most builds but it was a nice cherry on top, you didn't pick from each ultimate at the same time so while people had their favorites, all of them still got some use. (Rather than Selune's less useful Ultimates being ignored entirely)
C: No more God Calls means no more cool dialogue between the Gods and the Boss you're currently fighting. This is another just big bummer.
(Like you summoning Poseidon and him being like, Don't worry Nephew, I got your back and Hades being like "GDI Posiedon you son of a-")
At the very least if you had invincibility while casting the hex, that would help make them more useful.
But depending on the hex, it is just not worth it to use the most of the time.
Frankly the only ones I even consider at this point are
Healing Hex (100% of the time if it's an option)
Morphing Hex and Slow time hex.
Those passive buffs are nice things to have and moon pool is life saving, but ultimately this system simply isn't something one should prioritize (especially when a good number of hex for now are quite difficult to make good use)
The big thing to keep in mind is that each individual hex has, for the most part, it's own set of unique boons you can take along it's Path of Stars.
For example, say you wanted a bit more punch on your attacks; Night Bloom, Lunar Ray, Total Eclipse and even Twilight Curse... they all offer the common boon in Purpose (deal +5% damage while your hex is still charging) a few times across their Path of Stars. which can add up to quite a decent bonus...
But if you wanted to have defense, you'd have to choose Phase Shift (for Steadfastness... works while charging), or Lunar Ray (for Bearing, but only while using the Hex)
As an alternative to the defense example above, you could choose Dark Side for the invulnerability (plus the exclusive Tension boon to slightly increase your chance to dodge while Dark Side is charging), or Moon Water for healing (although it should be noted that while the Hex for Moon Water is good out of the gate, all the boons it offers in its Path of Stars only serve to improve the hex itself, and not the rest of your offense/defense)
Most good builds don't really require a LOT of boons to work, meaning most extra boons you get will be useless, while getting multiple hexes is genuinely always good, as the upgrades are kinda absurd (some upgrades give you invulnerability or further increase your whole damage by a % ).
That said, taking a HEX first thing (before even your first boon or hammer) is indeed quite bad, and I will literally give up on high fear runs when that happens.
I feel this comparison doesn't make a lot of sense. Melinone is a completely different character, who has different relationships with the gods than Zag. Hexes coming from Selune completely fits her themes.
This is probably the strangest critique of the hexes and selene I've seen.
This is like the critiques of nemesis because "she's mean".
Yes, Mel literally says moonlight guide us so yeah. She's got a connection to selene. That's not a problem.
Mel knows Selene, Artemis and Hermes personally and has met them all in person several times before the events of the game even happen (by that I mean like the actual point where she starts pursuing Chronos ofc)
