1. Scylla and sirens are so interesting to fight. It's a fun challenge to maneuver all three's attacks, and the "star of the show" function spice up each playthrough, esp with different weapons. It's SOO cool that their music changes as you defeat each of them... masterful. I originally didn't like them that much, but they've grown on me!
2. Chronos is so visually pretty, and he's HARD! His attack patterns are predictable enough that you're not completely floundering, but they're similar enough to each other that you are always kept on your toes. He's super sick and such a fun challenge. I fully agree that he's so over powered damage wise, but that's fine by me. It's part of early access scaling! Also like, get good. Skill issue.
3. Cerebus is hard depending on your boon combination. I honestly spend a lot of time thinking about my combinations SO THAT I am prepped for him. With the right combo, you're fine! Correctly anticipate and respond to his attacks, and you're good. Wrong combo, and it's a battle of very slow attrition, assuming you don't mess up your timing. All the while, you're having this beautiful cinematic fight with your BOY! CEREBUS! It's perfectly heartbreaking.
4. Hecate is pretty straight forward. She's way easier than Megaera (but I might be biased in saying this since I've played Hades so much I'm really trained on attack patterns). Regardless, I think it's a nice first challenge, good test for your build thus far, and cements Hecate as a character, mentor, and rebel. She reminds me a bit of Tsunade from Naruto, except way way edgier haha!
So you can pin him down on one spot during his jumping phases. this makes his shockwaves more predictable, pretty much turning him into a bigger Hecate when she does that Ring attack.
My ranking:
1. Scylla
2.) Eris
Im a filthy Zorephet main like I was a filthy Beowulf Shield main back in Hades 1.
The thing I love about the Eris fight is that it's a parry fest for Zorephet.
Unlike Shield where you can just hold to block, Axe has a huge risk if you hold [Special] for too long, because releasing it unintentionally will leave you open. Eris is a good test of that, it's like playing a rhythm game with her when you're using the Axe and that's the type of boss fights that get your neck veins pulsing.
3.) Chronos
Annoying when multiple visual effects and projectiles are overlapping each other, both from your attacks, the adds, and his. I can't count how many times I got hit by his boomerang move because the screen was littered with: golden balls, golden domes, more balls, Exploding Apollo casts, Zoraphet spinning effects, and many more...
were blocking his wind-up animations.
But aside from that, the mechanics themselves are super fun to learn, it's everything you've learned from the previous underworld path bosses rolled into one for a final exam. the last phase is also visually stunning and there's little surprise if you choose to pause the game infront of the Titan of Time, I personally love that gimmick.
4.) Hecate & Cerberus (tied)
They both have phases where you realize you need a steady pace of back forth dashing to dodge certain attacks effectively. namely Hecate's sheepify projectile, and Cerberus' One-Two repeating slaps while dragging himself forward.
Unlike Zagreus where you can ungabunga with multiple dashes, Mel only has one dash with a rhythmic cooldown, so both Hecate and Cerb are really good examples how to give players (new and old) some muscle memory for Mel's dashes.
5.) Polyphemus
Like you, I thought Poly was a little clunky at first, but when I figured him out by utlizing my Cast skills more on him than on the adds, it was an enlightening moment. I was like "I need to stop playing like Zagreus and start playing like Melinoe"
With that said I do think some attacks can be visualized better, like his wave attack that spreads out into small circles and skips as it advances for example... It's a little weird to deal with when there's multiple projectiles and other ground indicators are on the field.
1-Hecate- 8/10. A very strong first boss, and the perfect wall to this game. Her moves are nearly perfect for teaching the player about the DPS break points this game has, and how dodging works. She appears impossible (at least for me) at first, but is very easy, almost laughably so, once you figure out what you're doing, The exact sort of boss a roguelite should have. -2 for that stupid sheep move though
2-Sirens-3/10. Honestly, just too easy. Not very fun as it's just whacking them without any real thought until they die. I'd be shocked if they're not buffed soon. I honestly have had a harder time with some later default enemies. +1 for the fun theme of the fight, and +2 for the music, but the worst actual bossfight in the game, in my opinion
3- Bad Dog- 9/10. Very fun boss, I would consider this the first test of your build the game really gives you. He hits hard, but has a lot of punishable moves that a good build can really take advantage of. The arena is fun, he gives off the feeling of such an epic scale, and I honestly have no complaints about this fight
4-Chronos- 5/10. Not very interesting. The time mechanic doesn't really come into play, unless you pause. For a "God of Time" I expected more than just giant AOE death explosions you have to be a god of dodging to avoid, and he has way too much health. The only boss that I think needs a nerf.
5- Polyphemus-4/10. He's fine. Not hard, just sort of exists. I like his personality and he doesn't have any annoying gimmick behind him. Just a pretty standard "first boss"
6-Eris- 9/10. Very good fight. Fun, exciting, and well balanced. She doesn't have too much health, has a great moveset, and the banter you hear midfight makes it feel like a true "vs" battle. My favorite in the game, obviously
1st - Eris:
She being in your way just to cause discord and jeopardize your mission is real cool. She is one of the 2 bosses that feels challenging, her whole battle is fast, energetic and fun, I have only 2 problems with the battle first is how long the range of her cone burst shot is and how little space you have in the arena as the battle goes, for some melee builds I struggled a little because she dashes a lot into the burning areas, and not having enough space combined with her long range in the cone shot and her buffing her damage can be a little frustrating, but besides that, still my favorite boss.
2nd- Chronos
Love the theme and besides Eris he is the only other boss that feels challenging for me, I like that his attacks have a charge up or burst after some time, though I prefer his second phase rather than the first, when it comes to his attack sometimes it may get hard to see something specially if you use boons from Apollo or Zeus since they have a “similar color” also his wind up animation for the boomerang and the crescent slash attack seems way too similar to each other I have taken a lot of damage from these two because I dash in a certain direction in order to avoid one and end up being the other. But overall, great battle can’t wait to see what they will add for his 3rd phase in the future.
3rd - Scylla and the Sirens
The music and their design is solely the reason why I love this boss battle, but the battle is really easy, specially because they don’t move that much, Roxy stuck at one place and Jetty sometimes stay still a lot as well while shooting her bouncing projectile, another problem is that we only hear Scylla talking (after a while she gets tedious) would be nice to see Jetty and Roxy trying to talk and then Scylla being like bossy towards them, in the future when we get extreme measures I hope to see either a new member or they change their instrument don't know.
4th - Hecate
Having her as the first area boss in order to test you and see if you’re strong enough to proceed is a nice touch to the story, her move set is simple and straight great way to provide a small challenge for new players on how to learn the mechanics of the game, however I feel like her attacks are too slow, and after you defeat Chronos 2 times seeing her again ruins the concept of her testing Melinoë she does have an answer as for why she keeps doing this, but I didn’t felt it was a good answer, I would love if they made the first boss like the Fury Sister, but instead we get other Silver Sister to test us like Artemis.
5th - Polyphemus/Cerberus
Don’t have much to say about, in terms of why you fight them, Cerberus is tossed into the fields and guards the entrance by instinct and Polyphemus barn just happen to be close to the docks, both bosses I was able to defeat in the first try, their attacks are easy to memorize and to avoid (and Cerberus has an attack like Roxy which is the one were the rest of the arena explodes and only the circle near him is safe), both can be locked in place in your cast thus reducing their threat a lot, Cerberus when he dashes and Polyphemus when he tries to jump, and in both fights I’m more worried of the enemies they spawn than the boss itself. However, I do see potential in Cerberus if they let him move even in the first part of the fight and if they explore more of his heads for different attacks.
I’m really happy that supergiant games decided to make another Hades game, and I do hope that they go beyond with this one.
