Also getting the third hit in the combo does immense damage and sometimes I'll swing twice from safety before dashing in with the third hit to get a break on elites or similar.

Whether that's cause your own style and you haven't made it work, who knows.
The block isn't bad though, you can channel it for quite a while. I use it to eat Kronos' spam frequently and when the omega is charged he gets walloped typically by Hephaestus. Charon's aspect makes it even better because you can blow up your casts for massive damage. Not the biggest fan of Than's aspect though which is a shame because he's definitely my favourite of the Cthonic deities we've interacted with across both games.

As to the block being "bad" - the shield in hades literally was just too strong, they're avoiding one weapon being the best.
