You're a little late to the party, this "mechanic" no longer exists. Chronos doesn't unpause your game anymore.
Don't worry, though, you can still make your own fun and simulate this mechanic yourself by simply unpausing your game and letting Chronos chop your head off after he finishes the voiceline that he does when you do have to pause, for whatever reason that you did. It's an extra button press's worth of work, and I think you'll have suspend your disbelief a little bit and imagine that he's saying something snarky instead of whatever he says now, but it's possible to still make this fun mechanic a thing. Then you can die and go help Gram-Gram with her pacemaker. Or, you know, take a call. Answer the door. Go to the bathroom. Look at someone when they're talking to you. Etc. You'll just need to disrespect your own time instead of the game doing the honors for you.
