Could be, that Shift will activate it instantly, while Space will keep dodging (for M&K)
EDIT: And unsurprisingly, none of the commenters have the game and are just insulting it for no reason. How original.
Just give it a while and you'll get used to it.
Might be "input storage", basically if you tell your character to do something (attack, dodge, etc) but they're currently in a state where they can't do it, the game will remember that input for short period of time, usually around half a second. If your character is able to do that action within that window of time, they'll do it automatically. Could also be another type of action storage/queue.
Either way, it is nice that we don't have to frame-perfect our attack combos or dodges at the end of an attack. But it also means you have to be patient and deliberate with what you press, or you'll feed the game an input you don't actually want. Like using the two-handed axe and trying to run, only to instead windup your slow, heavy finisher - which is also going to miss because it swings where you're moving, which is away from the enemy.
The input storage window or however else the game handles it needs tuning for sure. It's easy to say "just don't spam the button" before you're dealing with the onslaught of environmental hazards, tiny projectiles and feral crack-rats flying at you from every direction. Even so, the game is fast paced and has you making split second decisions on reaction. Input storage WILL punish the player for reacting too quickly. With the axe, you can stop pressing attack, successfully dash, and not press attack after, but still use the long, full second finisher combo once your dodge ends. Game is committing to an action the player already abandoned.
It's especially annoying when you're trying to play the daggers, it's a very up close and personal kind of gameplay based on reflexes with the dodge but it's so slow between 2 dodges that you end up being hit a lot.
There's less defensive boons as well, can be really messy.
It could probably be tweaked but if people don't learn the game by using their dashes intently then it can't really be helped.
That's kinda my issue. Its usable at best. Sure you can you learn it and get good with it but my problem is that it just doesn't *f e e l* good to use. In an isometric bullet hell-esque game one of the most important aspects is your movement, and if that suffers, the whole game suffers too.
