Hades II

Hades II

About companions
So I don't think it's really debatable that the balance between the companions is pretty atrocious. The frog is just blows the cat out of the water in pretty much every way. The only thing the cat does that is better I guess is it can do more damage but it's still insignificant, whereas the frog just does so much more and does it way better.

+max hp is way better than the dinky death defy especially when you have death defies from arcana which you probably do. The ability to block projectiles can sometimes come in clutch and save you random damage or you can use it intentionally in situations like when hecate throws her polymorph at you. Even the gathering affinity on the frog is more useful cause fishing doesn't really do anything yet. To add on to all of this the frog just does his damage passively without any input whereas for the cat you need to intentionally go out of your way to get their damage off most of the time.

Normally I wouldn't post about stuff like this but the disparity feels so severe to the point where I only ever use the frog and it feels like there's no reason to ever use the cat. Maybe the cat could give another death defy for each level instead of just giving the 1 death defy more hp? Idk, it just needs some serious buffs or a rework I feel.

I have used the frog to actually play the game. I have now switched to the cat to farm (get fish to get bones to get Nightmares). I also prefer the frog and would probably not use the cat if not for farming, but I would not say the difference is very big. But just to be fair, in the current version you need a lot more bones (therefore fish), than psyche. So, the cat wins on that aspect.

I would not be surprised that a lot of people still prefer the cat though.

I think we need to see the other familiars and the function fish will have in the final version to really start talking about comparing them.

Well, no, gathering is actually the only real advantage the cat has over Frinos. Fish mean bones. Bones mean you can buy any resource. Frinos gets you Psyche, which, once you've got 30 grasp, is nearly useless.

I keep using Frinos and use the rod for fishing... I really don't see a point to use the cat.

It skips the mini game and guarantees a catch (even of the rare species). I want a lot of fish, and I want them quick, so I take fishing rod + cat.

But fishing is so easy. Even the mini game is MUCH easier than pacifying the souls with the tablet.

Yes, but it takes time. If you have the fishing rod you have more fishing spots, therefore more time loss in your farming if you do not have the cat. There is no reason to pick the frog if you are farming fish. You can do the pacifying mini game yourself on the rare occasions it happens. But the cat will save you minutes of fishing time every run.

Which minigame is easy/easier depends on the player. E.g. I find pacification easier than fishing.

Also true. But easy or not, I would always pick Toula for farming fish, because of how much time she saves.

I couldn't get the cat yet, after playing so much and beating both Chronos and Eris. How do you get it? Can't offer it anything. I encountered it a few times in below and above.

You need to cook some beast-loved morsel and give her as a treat when you see her. You may have to wait until Melinoe says something like "she wants something to eat" when you meet her. Not sure about that being a requirement.

Bring the tablet tool with you on an underworld run. At some point Hecate will comment on it and you'll unlock the recipe for the treats. (You may need to beat her while holding the tablet more than once, I'm unsure.)

If you need bones, the cat (+rod) wins. The time save + guaranteed catch are more valuable then everything frog does (if you need bones)

For everything else its the frog.

I got the cat and use the cat because I like cats - guaranteed fishing is just a bonus, lol. There's a shade in Tartarus that's basically impossible to do the minigame thing with though, so I'll need to take Frinos there at least once if he can help with that.

disagree. the frog's health boost is nice, but if you are using the Centaur card, it doesn't matter much by the end of the run whereas a death defiance is always very useful if you die often and it provides +10% extra damage if you use the relevant Hades boon

i think choosing between a death defiance and +40 (or w/e) initial health is a good choice. the cat's attack is easy to trigger once you get in the habit of it, also. it's only a problem in the Fields level because he can run far away, looking for a target

I really don't see a point to use the cat
