lol, stop with this BS. That card was running for 2 years straight without issues. Even in games where it utilized 99% it was running under 75 degrees. Do you even know how thermal throttling works? Even with worst cooling it should just lower the power, to keep it under maximum allowed degrees. And my pc has great cooling
I've heard that you should do it every 6 months but i do it every year. And if you clean your pc fairly regularly, you can still damage it like in using a high pressure duster etc.
'So the game could have just been the straw that broke the camel's back'
You don't really give us a lot of detail so idk why we should assume it is the game's fault first of all.
It sounds worrying but it isn't widespread or anything.
Stop it. Probably your core hotspot was already at peak before RoN when gaming. This is surely the culprit. The fact that RoN pushed it to its limits and probably shorted the core isnt the game's fault.
It was an underlying cooling issue. Take it from someone who is active in PC hardware for more then 30 years.
Did the game burn your GPU? NO.
The game only pushed it's core hotspot to the limits and at that point apparantly the cooling wasn't enough to keep it from overheating.
Some games rely on CPU more. Others on GPU. RoN is GPU heavy and ran the card at max. At this point the cooling wasn't sufficient. This is probably due to partly dried up cooling paste.
Don't blame the game. It only showed you an underlying problem which would have surfaced in the future anyway.
The core hotspot isnt the temp most performance tools show. These show the average core temps which mean ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
The core hotspot is the hottest part of the main core, which CPU-Z can read.
There normally is a 20 - 25 degree difference between the hotspot temp and shown core temp.
Say your core runs at 80 degrees, that means the hotspot is 100 or more.
I'm willing to bet my 4070 Super that this has been the issue.
Oh and 75 degrees under load for a 3090 is hotter than average. By around 15 degrees. So the core hotspot probably was at around 100. GPU's don't like that.
My twin fan 4070 runs no hotter then 60 average on full load. BIG difference.
I'm not sure what causes it because i'm not a PC expert, however, I do notice trends well. Two of the most common things I see are:
A) An extremely high percentage of people with these claims were running 3000 series cards with it happening to 3080ti's the most. No idea why that could be. Mine was a brand new 3080ti in a high end PC.
B) Uncapped FPS. For me it seems to be the uncapped FPS in the snake cam specifically. I used it on the same farm level, on the same door 3 times. Every time I moved the camera after going into it, I immediately had my monitors go black and had to hard reboot pc. On the 3rd time there was no coming back. Gigabyte RMA'd my card.
I post this comment not to spread misinformation, hate on RoN, or cause fear of playing the game. Just want to bring an issue to light that seems obvious. I know many people who play the game with uncapped fps and no issues but there seems to be something with Uncapped + 3000 series idk what that could be or it's just something out of my realm of knowledge.
So does mining. Unfortunately, it has become common practice to sell refurbished gpu's that were used for it, and some places even label them as "new".

Let alone that PCIe 12VHPWR debacle in RTX4000 lineup.
You don't have to be expert, but that is not an excuse not to educate yourself on the subject.
Hardware can be, and in this case was, defective.
