Agreed so sick of this daily 20gb download crap it literally takes over 15 mins and locks me out of playing other games as it kills my latency

30mb is download, 20gb is instalation. It won't slow down your internet.

Then that's a you issue. The updates are much faster on an SSD. Mine took 3 minutes.

That doesn't matter when patching and installing. Your system hardware is what effects that speed.

ssd lifespan greatly affected by how much free space it has im not gonna install all steam games on a 512 gigs ssd, i have super fast (500 mpbs) internet i can download 20 gigs update much faster than some 30 mb update patching over 20 gigs basicly, not to mention you cant do anything else on the pc while its patching, its a stupid way to implement updates and this doesnt happen with all the games i have on steam, im playing on a high end gaming laptop
LazyAmerican Dec 16, 2022 @ 10:48am
Why can't you do anything else? Guessing you have an older machine

Stupid or not, that is the way the game was designed... it's basically one huge file and every time it's updated it needs to be recompiled

this is definitely better than a massive download and replacement of complete files, this is a RTP style patch for in place data so that it doesnt have to xfer a ton of gigs over the wire.

this is 100% better a choice than poorly optimized upgrades that just come in a giant file replacement and require a ton of free space to do 2-3 copy overwrites

Was about to make the same thread. Archaic code I guess? All of their patches are like this.

this is modern, and its way better than the alternative, especially for people with metered connections or people down undah

only lazy devs release total bigfile replacement "patches" that force you to literally download virtually the entire game every time 2 kb changes

No other game I have ever had on Steam has so much trouble updating than this piece of garbage. It constantly swaps between downloading new data and uninstall and then reinstalling said data. It makes even small updates take 5 times longer than a similarly sized update for a real game.

this is a feature, you should be happy its this way, the alternative is not your friend

Unless you have some crap drive, overprovisioning accounts for this. You aren't going to kill your SSD by using it's intended free space.

this update method only good for people who live in US and have ♥♥♥♥♥♥ internet connections tbh, for the rest of us who live in EU internet speed is not a problem and i much prefer direct download rather than some encryption based install or whatnot, guess next time i format my pc, ill just install the game on my ssd

What are you talking about? US isn't behind EU on internet. You have that the other way around. In fact median download speeds in the US were twice as fast as in the EU in 2021. The only area EU beat us on was in their median growth by 18%.

That being said we have internet packages for consumers that are 1200mb/s and growing. Far from crap internet by any standards.
