Both correct. Hosting "friends only" and then launching into a map indeed spawns you solo.
Keep in mind though, A.I suspects act differently when it just one player, and some missions like "elephant" are far more challenging as a solo, in my experience.
Far more engaging and tense gameplay though.

The closest you get is bringing 2 officers with you, either red or blue. You can give commands to them separately. So you can order on team to stay behind and bring the other.
