Flashlight Brightness tips?

I can't make friends with the flashlight. It seems they are all the same, I can't see a difference between the various variants. The area it lights is too small and far too bright. It just creates a blindspot of contrast that makes it harder to see.
Does anyone have this experience and know of a clever way to make the flashlight wider and less bright?

Not without modding, no. Funnily enough, this is one of the very things I am addressing in a mod I am making, with various flashlights, wider beams, and different luminosity based upon data charts and real world comparisons. Unfortunately, it is not out yet.
