So basically anything in the assault rifle category will drastically outperform any of the submachine guns.
In the real world, against unarmored opponents shotgun lethality should be about at the same level as rifle lethality but in game that is not the case and shotguns are extremely underpowered.
so your telling me that theses sticks or death are all the same ?
This isn't inauthentic. At close range, an end user is often prioritizing maneuverability, or balance, overall weight, overall length, length of pull, or userfamiliarity with the manual of arms, or performance with a can or a whole host of other subjective and objective things. At close range things like barrel length and it's effect on velocity are largely academic. And barrel length doesn't actually correlate to increased mechanical accuracy so you might as well go with the shorter more maneuverable option. This does change the recall impulse and how the gas system, buffer weight and spring are configured if you want something that's actually pleasant to shoot. But even then you still had a lot of folks running around with the HK416 for years before switching back to gas guns.
Since this nuance is largely irrelevant RoN doesn't bother simulating it. They might add a little bit more complexity down the line but it shouldn't be that big of a difference unless they really start extravagating things with video game logic. So run whatever rifle you want.
Returning back to the subject of submachine guns and PCCs. They are by definition chambered in pistol rounds. Assault rifles are by technical definition chambered in intermediate rife rounds. Pistols and pistol rounds are really bad at stopping people and have a surprisingly low chance of killing them. Rifles on the other hand are not. RoN reflects this at a basic level. As far as handling and recoil go submachine guns and PCCS tend to be smaller and lighter so many users find them handier. But they're also smaller and lighter and are often straight blowback with extremely high rates of fire so they can have significantly harsher felt recoil impulses and be uncomfortable and hard to shoot. Fortunately for the non firearms literate, all the submachine guns available to the player are known for their light recoil impulse and that is reflected in in-game handling.
And as I previously mentioned shotguns seem to be in need of a significant recalculation and mechanically the advantages to running a shotgun over a rifle are not represented. So you can absolutely run a shotgun if you want but you'll probably be disappointed with in-game performance.
