Ready or Not essentially consists of two major gameplay elements. The first is gunfighting. This is probably the most realized part of the game, even if it could use some refinements to the aim model. The second is small unit close quarter tactics. It's not as fleshed out and still needs a lot of refinement but it's a core part of the gameplay loop.
Players with better than average first person shooter experience (and some luck) can coast on gunfighting alone, but I would argue that the main gameplay comes from tactics. So as flawed as the friendly AI can be (although I will point out that it's actually a lot better than most games) learning how to utilize them is a rewarding and core part of the game.
If you don't want to lock them in a room or tell them to stay put at the spawn while you do your own thing, there are some small changes you can make that will improve your experience. First change your default quick orders in the settings menu. Second swap your order menu and your quick order key. I find it's more fluid and intuitive to assign quick orders with the middle mouse button and open the menu with Z. Always have your AI Teammeats doing something, they can hold long cover or you can pre stack them at the door while you check a few things. And when order to they will report and restrain suspects and civilians as well as pick up evidence. They're also excellent for placing wedges.
