Is there any way to play the game as someone other than an extremely generic white guy?

In COOP, yes, in singleplayer no, not without mods. In SP, you are always playing as Judge because it is his story/he is the main character. In COOP, you are free to switch between characters and voices, I forget how many there are exactly.

hard to imagine a game that aims for realism has the vast majority of the SWAT team as white men. SWAT doesn't do DEI hires. yet.

I also thought the race thing was weird. I don't know about DEI, but it was weird for the OP to point out the officers skin color. Also for the OP you can start a multi-player friends only lobby and play as any skin/race you want with voice customization as well (only problem is no SWAT AI so that may be a deal breaker.)

OPs comment was kinda poorly worded, but they are referring to the 'action hero cliche' character. It's not being derisive towards any skin color, just the trope.

most of the Fear series, Crysis, Doom, The Forest, you name it, it's an ocean of random white guys.
