What’s the deal with armor coverage?
Does coverage affect speed in the same way that material does? Will I move faster with front only than I will with front/back?

I would assume. I never really found there to be any advantage in moving faster in the game. I pretty much rocked ceramic back and front and every mission.

heavy or light?

more coverage only affects acceleration while using steel. ceramic and kevlar dont have movement penalties no matter how much coverage you use. i may be wrong about ceramic but it's too small to tell anyway

If steel/ceramic/Kevlar don’t have movement penalties than there would be no point in Kevlar existing in-game?

There is no point, same for stabvest which don't protect against knives. As girthquake said only steel have acceleration penalty (23% per plate). You can check this spreadsheet https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1d89lpFDA9lo_v13iBlnhtuA6DvuUnKfPaeo0d4RBGJ4/edit#gid=695296307 here's almost everything you need to know about the game.

IIRC the type of armor also affects how many things you can carry (grenades, tools, ammo, etc.)

That doesn’t make sense. If there’s literally no difference between ceramic and Kevlar than they wouldn’t both be in the game.

Difference in protection, check spreadsheet, there are everything about armor right now.

So basically for the people who do not want to read the spreadsheet, great work with that by the way.

Kevlar is constant 50% damage reduction, cannot be broken.

Ceramic is 100% damage reduction but it can be broken in a couple of hits, then it is weaker than kevlar by 10%.

Steel is 70% protection, cannot be broken but it slows you down dramatically.

If you don't have coverage, if you choose only front coverage and such, your armour will be filled up with kevlar.

This tells me the most viable option is to just have front coverage steel plates and nothing else.

If that was true then you'd be using steel plates instead but you dont because they make you a slug.

There is value to mobility, especially when you fight against rifles that melt most protective equipment anyway.

The state of the AI's combat behaviour makes this less apparent, but it can make the difference between getting winged or getting killed.
