I tell my men to clear a room with the stinger grenade, I know for a fact the main bad guy is in that room. They stack up, open the door and throw the grenade at the front of the door, it bounces right back into the group, stuns all of us, then they run in while stunned and 2 of my guys get killed. Is this really part of the game or is the AI just idiot trash?

I've had that happen to me. Terrible. I give my ai team gas grenades and I'm the only one who throws flash and stingers now.

Use the Clear With Leader command when stacking and breaching. It will give you time to throw the grenades yourself and the team will wait for it to go off before entering.
