Like, Player 1 gets red squad, Player 2 gets blue squad. Ends up being 6 units, but it gets around the issue of 'who is issuing commands' that seems like it'd be the biggest deal breaker. When a player 3 is added, remove player 2's squad, and you have 5. When a player 4 is added, reduce player 1's 'squad' to 1 unit, and player 5 is no ai on your side at all.
But I'm sure the devs'll figure it out...hopefully soon. I really want to play with my friends but only two of us own it currently, and we'd only have a third at best.
It goes further beyond just how to divide up the AI. I think realistically the host will control them until death, and then the second in line gets them. I don't see them letting players expand the vanilla squad size past 5 just to fit in AI.
The real complications come with the actual development of the AI. They're right now programmed to well, focus around one player, so they have to account for another which is probably one of the easier parts. But you also have to worry about all the networking and technical work behind the scenes, preventing desync, ensuring proper transfers, etc. The networking part is the hardest from my understanding.
