How many friends can you play with in co-op?

Officially the game supports 1-5 players. Though if you play with less than 5 players you are essentially handicapping yourself because the game does not account for having less than a full squad. There are no bots in co-op to fill out the five player slots. They have said they might look into having this as a feature.

Unofficially, there's a mod called "In-Game Menu" mod that allows you to unlock the co-op player limit. I don't know what the upper limit is, but I've been apart of 10~ player lobbies before 1.0. Again, the game does not account for this so its significantly easier.

Hm.. so it's actually that much of a difference going from 5 players to 4?

No. I was moreso saying the game will be more difficult for 2 players than 5 players. You and your friend group should be fine.
