Best i can do is clarify a couple of mechanics, if that helps.
Bloodgrounds are tied to first the first heardstone you erect, so if you place another herdstone in an adjacent territory to those bloodgrounds it's limiting the new bloodgrounds area. (they are independent to provinces)
Also any territories already sacked or razed inside what will be it's bloodgrounds before the herdstone is erected will then yield less or no ruination for the ritual.
It's also worth noting you get bonuses to the rituals on full moons so it's best to perform the actual ritual on one of those for more points.
I tend to build my herdstones on major capitals of other factions to get factionwide bonuses with another herdstone or so between them as required to form a loose connection linking my area's together with the shaman construction on all of them enabling vision over the bloodgrounds.
Whats really concerning about what you have said though is not getting a bloodstone returned if a herdstone is destroyed, you might need to file a proper bug report on their website.
Possible fix is: Hard Save the game. Abaddon all herd stones, even ones you completed the ritual of blood at and skip your turn. One herd Stone Shard should be refunded back to you.
