NIMBY Rails
Best train for "French" Thameslink?
In my latest misadventures in NIMBY Rails, I've been streaming a save in which a Parisian fleet is used in London & The South East. The Underground is fine and uses rubber tired stock on some lines (Jubilee, Central, Bakerloo and Victoria), Crossrail is an RER using MI2Ns and MI09s and the Overground uses a smorgasbord of transilien rolling stock, both double and single deck.

However one roadblock I've encountered is what trains to use for Thameslink services? This will be an RER line due to it's important, but it's also a transilien route too in a way. The issue comes from needing a train to fit the following specifications:

- 160kph minimum top speed (for running on fast lines between Finsbury Park - Stevenage)
- High pax capacity (quad digits)
- High acceleration
- 4 or greater doors per coach
- A train (or formation in pairs) length of between 220m and 250m

I cannot find a single SNCF/RATP train that meets all requirements.

The Regio 2N doesn't feel suitable for the line and struggles with good acceleration, the Regiolis lacks capacity and doors, the MI 79/84 MI 2N, and Z 2N lack the top speed, the Z50000 Francilian falls flat too and whilst the RER NG has supposedly reached high speeds in testing, it's pegged to 140kph in game and is VERY expensive.

I was thinking maybe a legally distinct Regiolis in a 12 car formation and lots of doors could work if it was made, but I am super stumped as for what train to use. Any suggestions and/or input on what train to use?

You can try making a 12-car Regiolis by switching to unrestricted coupling?

That's certainly possible, but even at 12 cars, the TKR Regiolis could only carry 697 pax, which isn't enough. Hence why I was thinking of asking someone to possibly make a brand new one for these services or even possibly a FLIRT 3XL, even if it's not French.

I'd suggest taking one of the existing EMUs with a lower top speed, and then modifying the top speed (and power and price) in the mod file. It's relatively simple. Then you wouldn't need to get into the world of modelling trains.

Ehhhhh, that feels a bit too close to cheating if you ask me.

Hi, I don't think it's a kind of cheating. I'm working in real life for public transportation consulting and there are several problems like yours. If you don't find a train which is useful for your operations you have to formulate requirements for a new construction. In your case you'll use the Regio 2N-Trains with better acceleration. It's the work of the train factories to answer with the right product.

Oh yeah, certainly. I think it's a case of I'm fine using a new train that's built to (or comes close to) these specifications instead of modifying the trains in the .txt files, since if I'm going to edit those files, there's pretty much nothing stopping me from just having the trains have a capacity of 5000 and costing $10 and that's not fair, or fun lol.

It's kind of a tough one. The french and Thameslink simply have different requirements so to meet them they have different specs. UK can't have double deck in real life (except HS1) due to tunnel, bridge and OHLE clearances, but french outer suburban services don't need to go as fast as UK ones because the lower frequency of long distance trains and the extra tracks in Ile-de-France means that you can stay out of/ get out of the way without the extra speed.

It's either a modded txt file or time for trade-off studies.

Of course you could do that, or you could have a good conscience and change the price so that it reflects the better attributes in a fair way.

你自己設計車皮阿
我的線路基本上也是我自己做的車
.....然後因為懶 很多車都沒更新(還在1.0加速度)

Designing my own train would be nice, though I don't properly know how to. I'd prefer getting someone else to do it for me.

Oh yeah, true, but in this save, the concept of size restrictions doesn't matter. Suspension of disbelief has gotten me this far haha.

In which case mod the .txt file for the french vehicle's speed without getting cheaty on the costs or purchase price

Upon a few hours sleep and some more thinking, I've come to the decision that 160kph running, whilst helpful, would not be necessary for these services and thus, I made my decision to go with the MI 79/84s for the Thameslink RER. 140kph will suffice if they call at more stops and they also have excellent capacity onboard.

HOWEVER, if anyone is working on the MI 20[fr.wikipedia.org], the upcoming replacements for the 79/84s, that would be very much appreciated. Technical stats exist but not too much in terms of full designs as of yet.

Oh and if anyone does, bump it from 120 to 140 pls
