Splitting services

Is there any way to make a service which splits at a station into two services? It seems there isn't but am curious if people have worked out a way to do it!

It is theoretically possible, if you have a train waiting as black hole on a track that starts its journey as the first train just leaves, and disappears just before the other train is arriving.
However, dev has not said anything on this topic as far as I am aware, so I would wait until it's the "right" way to do it like that.

Wouldn't the issue be though with transferring passengers from the full train to half trains? They would need to get off the train and then get into the two new ones. I doubt this will practically work.

You think about real passengers, but the ones in the Code do not need to do that, it's more the Problem of how many people can get in the Train and how man can fit in the split Train afterwards. However I don't think this is too hard to implements since a Pax can check whether the Train-part which he wants to enter is full or not-

Dev has actually said at some point it is technically impossible with the current train system.

No, I was thinking about NIMBY passengers, the real ones would find their way around, though not without complaining. In NIMBY, passengers cannot ride into the black hole. This means you need to disembark everyone at the station where the split happens. Then you need to pull away the train into the black hole. Then you need to pull two trains out of the black hole (which may be a different black hole if your platform is single directional, so the trains would pull out into the forward direction and come to it from the back). Then the passengers hopefully would all re-board. Also, you would probably want to split the platform into two (connected with a short connection section), so both shorter trains can stand there at the same time. Definitely doable, but does take some work and I wonder if passengers may be looking for alternative ways to travel (if there is one).

Dev has actually said at some point it is technically impossible with the current train system.

Actually, the last the dev has said on the matter is that parts of the 1.5 code have been prepared for it just in case. BUT it would be hard to make it user friendly, so it remains unlikely but still a maybe.
