why is this game 16 gb
map data? why cant it just download the stuff you actually use?

Let me choose which continents to download or just drag a square over a map of the earth and download that part, like with google maps offline.

Why is it that every day someone opens a thread asking the same question?

Then you would have to specify in advance which bit of the world you were intending to use!

And this game is intended be offline playable, so the map would have to be included.

A very good, fast and compleet map of the whole world? What is wrong with it? Ask the dev to split it into pieces and sell it as DLC??

A map of the world, down to an individual street is an amazing accomplishment. The developer could EASILY have sold this game, with England only, and started cranking out DLC's one every three month, like all the truck sims.

Not sure what the complaint is...I have started games in Illinois, Alaska, England, and Spain. Already have my money's worth, at 56 hours played.

Why does 16GB for a game you spend so many hours in to just get started even matter?

I lost my internet for a while last night. Happy to see NIMBY worked great offline.

The real answer to this question is cost. The developer would have to host a map streaming service himself or pay for his customers to access a third party one. Whether it be OpenStreetMaps, Google or some other map provider, they all charge for their service. Even if the developer hosted it himself he would have to pay hosting and bandwidth charges. It's much cheaper to just bundle the map with the game and use the Steam service.

And then they would also rely on the source not changing how they organise their data or not screwing things up randomly, and they would have a harder time patching the map for the game's benefit (eg, what if in future we want to roll back to previous decades with smaller cities and less roads, etc).

The level of detail on the map is awesome and well worth the download.

Why is there 16GB of the same old question?

Duh!
Zoom in the opening screen. There's your 16GB.

The 'actual' game is only 40Mb, if that ;)

There is 'one' file, which is maps, so this game just 'overlay's' on top of that. So a spreadsheet on top of a map file ;) That is it. No altering districts here ;)

Very little will change as regards map, if anything, unless you wanna download 16+Gb for a 40Mb game again ;)
