Bridges over small watercourses
I've noticed the game hates building bridges over rivers. Understandable for big ones but irritating for tiny streams and channels.

I've been tinkering with rebuilding my local lines in rural Norfolk (UK) and there is so much low lying drained and reclaimed land criss crossed with drainage channels that's it very clunky to build. In reality these are all tiny channels crossed with a small culvert. I wondered if it would be possible to allow the game to automatically build a bridge over such small water features (sub 10m wide)

If I did that, it would be balanced by high price. Check the price on the auto overpasses. In these cases it's better to just switch to viaduct all the way.

Could we have an option to toggle between auto-viaduct or auto-overpass? So far I've found that it's never (?) reasonable to use overpass.. it's just so expensive, so I build viaducts for everything. Doing it manually is more time-consuming than I'd like :(

Also more crossing types or maybe some better cost scaling for these features would be appreciated. I can't believe it costs $1m for a simple bridge over a small road.

One of the drawbacks I think is that in real life, the roads fit the railways in a lot of cases.. but in game, we're forced to work around the roads, which might make things too expensive a lot of the time. Maybe it could be possible to purchase build rights in areas which discounted the cost of tunnels and bridges around roads etc? Or for cities to subsidise the costs of these things/waive construction costs if they really want a railway link?

Using number key 1234 as quick switch between rail type is a big lifesaver.

The method I have been using is to go along the route and add all the viaducts first in one go, keeping them as small as possible, which also helps with seeing where the route is going without laying a lot of track. But you're right that using the hotkeys is vital :)
