The lag is caused by some defects in the original game engine. it can't be fixed. Ever. They aren't even try to fix the issues, because... it's impossible to fix. It's why they stopped development of the game originally.
They're supposedly re-coding the game in a new engine. They just put up this old version of the game for free in the meantime. They aren't charging anything for it, since they know it has issues.
Do you have any links or info regarding the rework?
They weren't "bad". They just made their own game engine, and unfortunately, It just has some flaws. This game was supposed to help sell licensing of the game engine to other parties. That never happened.
This game, at the time it came out, was actually pretty revolutionary. They were doing a lot of stuff that later mmos did, such as actual aiming at enemies, instead of just hitting tab and letting the character auto-attack (MMO's like world of warcraft are one hair away from an idle game as far as I care).
Like every other game in the world, the value of a game is often weighted by what you like to do, who you like to do that with, and is everything working when I show up...I spent some time playing FE recently and the lag/delay was about .500-.700 -never really notice much.
OFC, I do not know how many players where on the server.
